MARCI TURNER QUALIFIES FOR 2007 U.S. WOMEN'S OPEN

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Soon-to-be senior Marci Turner qualified for her first U.S. Women's Open on Monday by registering an even-par 144 at Keith Hills Country Club in Buies Creek, N.C. Turner moved on to the sectional qualifying at Buies Creek after placing sixth in the local qualifying round in Salisbury, N.C., on May 14. Playing as an amateur, the Tompkinsville, Ky., product enjoyed nine top-10 finishes and three victories in national tournaments prior to the start of the summer.
"I am so excited about this opportunity," Turner said. "I don't think it has hit me yet. It will be fun to test my game against the best [players] in the world."
Former Tennessee great Young-A Yang will also be making an appearance at the U.S. Women's Open to be held at Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club in Southern Pines, N.C., June 28- July 1. Yang graduated in 2003 as UT's only four-time National Golf Coaches Association All-American (1999-2002). She made the cut in Rockville, Md., on Monday by posting a 143 at the Woodmont Country Club/ Old South Country Club.
Golda Johansson, a 2006 graduate of UT, also qualified for the sectional qualifying round after carding a 75 at the Imperial Golf Course in Naples, Fla., in the local qualifying round. Her sectional qualifying site was at the Country Club at Heathrow in Heathrow, Fla.
The U.S. Women's Open is a 72-hole tournament to be held from June 25 through July 1. A total of 156 professionals and amateurs from all over the world will play for the Championship Cup. Past U.S. Women's Open Champions have included such greats as Juli Inkster, Birdie Kim and Annika Sorenstam.
