VOLS TIED FOR 16TH AFTER DAY TWO AT NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Tennessee men's golf team stayed in the middle of the pack on Thursday finishing tied for 16th place after two rounds of the NCAA Championships played at the Golden Horse Golf Club in Williamsburg, Va.
The Vols fired an 11-over-par 287 and will to score well in the third round to prevent missing the cut before the fourth and final round on Saturday.
The third round is scheduled to begin Friday at 8 a.m. Eastern Time after which the field will be cut to the top 15 teams and six individuals.
"We got off to a very poor start and they really battled and fought hard to shoot a respectable score," coach Jim Kelson said. "Overall, they have put themselves in the position to make the cut and obviously we will need a very good round tomorrow but we have confidence in that and certainly that is our goal."
Tennessee is now 11 over par for the tournament but remains 18 strokes back of current leader Stanford, which shot 2-under. The Vols are only one stroke behind Michigan State, the last team to make the cut.
Minnesota is a stroke back in second, Coastal Carolina ended the day in third, ETSU was fourth and Charlotte fifth.
Junior Charlie Ford pared his first 15 holes before bogeys on 16 and 18 put him at 2-over-par 72 for the round. He now stands at 1-over-par for the tournament and is tied for 29th.
Senior Tino Weiss had the best score of the day for the Vols, a 67 and jumped 78 spots from 107th into a tie for 29th. After starting the day with a double bogey on No. 10, Weiss was 1-over going into the front nine where he made four birdies to finish 3 under.
Philip Pettitt shot a 3-over-par 73 in the second round and is tied for 58th. The junior started the day rough after he quadruple bogeyed his first hole but used three birdies to salvage the round.
Sophomore Chris Paisley finished the day at 5-over-par 75 to stand tied for 102nd. He had a birdie on No. 7 but could not overcome four bogeys over his first nine holes.
David Holmes rounded out the Tennessee lineup. The freshman fired a 7-over-par 87 and is in 156th place with a scorecard of80-77--157.
