Tennessee defeated LSU 70-67 in Knoxville on Feb. 6, and have won 10 of the last 13 games with the Tigers. The Vols have posted a 6-2 mark in the SEC Tournament against LSU. It is the first meeting with the Tigers in the tournament since UT posted a 72-65 win in 1998 in Atlanta.
The Volunteers are the Eastern No. 3 seed. They held that slot in 1992, 1998 and 2003, going 1-1 the first two times before falling to Auburn, 66-53, in 2003. UT last reached the tournament finals in 1991, losing to Alabama. Their last title came in 1979, a 75-69 overtime victory over Kentucky.
Tennessee ranks third in SEC Tournament titles with four, trailing only Kentucky's 25 and Alabama's six. The Vols also rank third with 54 tournament victories, trailing both Kentucky (109) and Alabama (55).
In addition, former two-time second team All-America guard Allan Houston (1990-93) will be honored as part of the 2007 class of the Chick-fil-A SEC Basketball Legends. This marks the ninth year of the basketball legends program. He will be recognized at halftime of UT's first game at the tournament.
Houston finished his career as Tennessee's all-time leading scorer with 2,801 career points and ranked 13th in NCAA history in scoring at the conclusion of his career. His 346 career 3-pointers led the SEC and ranked sixth all-time in the NCAA. He led the SEC in scoring with 22.3 points in 1993 and became only the fourth SEC player in SEC history to score 2,000 points in three seasons.
He joined Ernie Grunfeld as UT's only players to be four-time first team All-SEC selections, in addition to being named MVP of the 1991 SEC Tournament. Houston was selected to the ESPN Silver Anniversary All-SEC Team in 2004 and was a member of the United State's gold medal winning team at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia.
The first round draft pick (11th selection overall) of the Detroit Pistons in 1993 completed his 12-year NBA career following the 2004-05 season with 14,551 points. As a member of the New York Knicks, he was named to the NBA All-Star team in 2000 and 2001. He led the NBA in free throw percentage in 2003 at .919.
The 2007 Chick-fil-A SEC Basketball Legends class includes Mike Nordholz, Alabama; U.S. Reed, Arkansas; Henry Hart, Auburn; Andrew DeClercq, Florida; Litterial Green, Georgia; Kenny Walker, Kentucky; Collis Temple Jr., LSU; Elston Turner, Ole Miss; Richard Williams, Mississippi State; Zam Fredrick, South Carolina; and Jan van Breda Kolff, Vanderbilt.
