Tennessee's Chris Lofton was named a second team All-America by the Associated Press today. A 6-foot-2 junior guard, Lofton led the Vols to the second-most wins (24) in school history and an appearance in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. The Associated Press Southeastern Conference Player of the Year, Lofton led the league in scoring (20.8) and in 3-pointers per game (3.42). The Maysville, Ky., native's 106 3-pointers this season were the second-most in school history and his 313 career 3-pointers rank third in SEC history.
Lofton becomes the first Vols player to earn first or second team All-America honors from the Associated Press since Dale Ellis was a first team selection in 1983. Last year Lofton was an honorable mention selection by the Associated Press.
Freshmen Kevin Durant (Texas) and Greg Oden (Ohio State) were named to the first team. They were joined by Alando Tucker (Wisconsin), Acie Law IV (Texas A&M) and Arron Afflalo (UCLA). Second team selections included Nick Fazekas (Nevada), Tyler Hansbrough (North Carolina), Jared Dudley (Boston College), Joakim Noah (Florida) and Lofton. Third team picks were Jeff Green (Georgetown), Al Horford (Florida), Aaron Brooks (Oregon), Al Thornton (Florida State) and Aaron Gray (Pittsburgh).
