Tennessee baseball player Jeff Lockwood was honored by the Southeastern Conference office Monday when the league announced that he has been named the SEC Freshman of the Week following an impressive dual-role performance against Georgia last weekend at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
Lockwood starred for UT both at the plate and on the mound while helping lead the Vols to a sweep over the Bulldogs in front of his hometown fans. For the series, the former Halls High School standout hit a team-best .556 with a 1.111 slugging percentage. He collected five hits and drove in five runs while also scoring five more himself.
In Friday's 4-3 win, Lockwood's pinch-hit, two-run homer in the seventh inning lifted the Vols to a one-run victory. He also pitched a perfect ninth inning in which he retired the side 1-2-3 with a pair of strikeouts to log his third save of the season.
On Saturday, he went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and two RBIs. He added two more hits, two more runs and another RBI in Sunday's victory. And he also took the mound in that game, retiring six of UGA's last seven batters through the final two innings.
The lone hit surrendered by Lockwood Sunday ended a streak of 14 straight batters retired. His season ERA stands at an impressive 0.55, and he owns a record of 2-0 with a team-high three saves.
He is the second Vol to be named an SEC weekly award winner this season, joining Feb. 26 Pitcher of the Week James Adkins. The SEC started naming a Freshman of the Week last season, and Lockwood is the third honoree from Tennessee.
The Volunteers have now garnered nine SEC Player, Pitcher or Freshman of the Week awards since 2005.
