The Tennessee men's tennis team got all it could handle from a very game Furman squad Sunday as the Volunteers squeaked out a 4-3 victory at the Knoxville Racquet Club.
"It was a great day for the program," head coach Sam Winterbotham said. "The guys got what they needed today, they got to compete and they were challenged and that's what we need going into the SEC season."
The Vols (6-2) won the doubles point for the seventh time in eight matches. Bobby Cameron and Kaden Hensel won at the No. 1 position, 9-7 over Brian Crook and Bo Ladyman to clinch the point for UT. Davey Sandgren and Johnny Thornton, playing at the No. 2 position in the lineup for the first time this season, defeated Ryan Friend and Andy Sobczyk 8-5.
Adam Hubble continued his solid play from the morning with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Michael Kociecki at the No. 6 singles position. Hubble is now 16-5 this season in singles.
Ben Rogers gave UT a 3-0 lead with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Chris Gilli. Rogers now has a team-best six wins in dual matches.
Chris Racz clinched the match for Tennessee with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Jordan Walters. Racz won both of his matches Sunday at the No. 5 singles position and is now 4-0 in dual matches.
The Vols had clinched the match at this point but the Paladins showed no quit as Furman won the next three singles matches to close the match.
Andy Juc defeated the 29th-ranked Hensel 6-4, 7-5 at the No. 1 position. Daniel Knause outlasted Derek Stephens 7-6, 3-6, 1-0 at the No. 3 slot and Ladyman held off UT's Sandgren 7-6, 2-6,6-3 to win. Sandgren's defeat was only the second time in 12 matches that the UT freshman lost a match that went three sets.
The Vols open SEC play Friday when they host 20th-ranked LSU at 4 p.m.
