Cain Has Successful Knee Surgery
December 11, 2007 | Women's Basketball
Jenny Moshak, University of Tennessee Assistant Athletics Director for Sports Medicine, announced late this afternoon that Lady Vol basketball freshman center Kelley Cain had undergone successful knee surgery at St. Mary???s Hospital today.?? Cain will be lost for the season.??
???Drs. Greg Mathien and Russell Betcher, UT team orthopaedists, performed surgery on Kelley???s right knee this afternoon,??? said Moshak.?? ???The surgery addressed and corrected the patella subluxation of her knee.???
Cain, a 6-6 rookie from Atlanta, Ga., initially missed several workouts due to a concussion suffered in practice.?? She made her Lady Vol debut in the second exhibition game, versus Carson-Newman, in impressive fashion.?? In 25 minutes, Cain was 5-11 from the field, 1-3 from the charity stripe, ripped down 12 rebounds (4 offensive and 8 defensive), scored 11 points and added four assists, three steals and two blocked shots.??
???In a subsequent practice, Kelley landed on a defender???s foot,??? said Moshak.?? ???In doing so, she twisted her knee which caused her knee cap to shift laterally.???????????
Cain???s presence in the post was imposing in the Carson-Newman contest and she showed her versatility on both ends of the court.?? It was determined in late November that Cain would need surgery.
During her outstanding prep career at St. Pius X H.S., Kelley tallied 2,017 points, 1,420 rebounds, 194 assists, 219 steals and 660 blocked shots in four seasons.?? Her career game highs included 32 points 24 rebounds and 11 blocks, six assists and five steals.?? Additionally, the dominating post was the force behind three of four state titles during her tenure.?? A recipient of?? a number of honors, she was selected to the 2006-07 USA Today Girls High School All-American Team, WBCA, McDonald???s and Parade 2007 All-American, as well as the 2007 Metro Atlanta Girls??? High School Player of the Year and the Georgia Athletics Coaches Association 4A Player-of-the-Year in 2006 and 2007.
The loss of Cain drops the Lady Vol roster to just nine players.?? UT sophomore point guard Cait McMahan is still rehabbing her right knee from surgery on June 6, 2007 and is projected to redshirt this season.
