Coach Fulmer's Media Day Comments
November 20, 2007 | Football
???We were pleased to get the win last week over Vanderbilt. Much like Vanderbilt, this is always a tough game. You???ve got the great history, great players and great games that have been played; you???ve got a border-state rivalry. There is a lot riding on the game for both teams.
???Our team certainly has been tough and resilient during the course of the season. We had a couple of disappointing losses early where we didn???t play well, some injuries we had to fight though and certainly some youth in spots, but here we are in the last week of the regular season playing for the SEC Eastern Division Championship. I think it???s a great compliment to the coaches, a great compliment to the players and their toughness.
???The biggest thing we have done is stick together, believe in each other and continue to fight. We???ve pushed ourselves to where we are at this point. There is a group of hard-working, tough-minded young men on this team that absolutely wouldn???t let go during the season.
???Kentucky is a very fine football team. When you look at their skill level on offense, it???s exceptional. (Andre) Woodson is a very fine quarterback. They have done a tremendous job coaching and developing him. He had an outstanding year last year and this year as well.
???(Jacob) Tamme is one of the best players in the league. He does a lot of things for them and certainly has our attention going into this game. They have a corps of wide receivers that probably are the best group we have played against this year, and that???s saying a lot. The running backs are really good, and the offensive line is big and athletic.
???They are a solid, good defensive team. Much like us, they???ve had their moments where they played really well and their moments when they haven???t played as well as Coach Brooks would???ve liked them to. They have an excellent kicking game all the way around, and they are very well coached.
???During the course of the season, our team has matured. Some of it would be natural maturity as we have gone through the year. The young players get experience and grow as the games and practices go on. Some of our maturity has come the hard way, which is still maturity. Mostly, we have matured by going to the practice field and having good habits and working hard to improve. That is a credit to the team. Also, we have improved by believing in each other and staying the course to get where we are at this point.
???We have some shortcomings. That is something we are addressing long term and short term. The short-term progress has been significant along the way, and that???s what you like to see as a coach.
???We need to play well in this ballgame, play at a very high level to get a win over Kentucky. As in all big games, I think the kicking game will play a big part. Certainly from our standpoint, it has made a difference in our season. You have seen a young guy like Daniel Lincoln who has stepped up and been consistent, but also made some very clutch kicks for us. Dennis Rogan has given new life to our return game. We would not be where we are if those guys hadn???t done as well as they have done, along with our coverage and return teams.
???Defensively, we know we have a big challenge and its starts up front. It has not been the best defensive front we???ve had at Tennessee, but it???s been a group that has been very willing to work hard and improve. This needs to be one of our best games.
???Our linebackers for the most part have played very well during the course of the year. Jerod Mayo continues to be outstanding. Our secondary???to overcome what we???ve had to overcome with five starters lost in the last year???those guys have stepped up and done as well as they could have done.
???Offensively, again it starts up front. Our offensive line has done a really good job. To give up three sacks as many times as we have thrown the ball, that???s incredible. That???s a credit to them, but also to Erik (Ainge) for managing things and our running backs protecting.
???Erik has been a key to our season and will be a key in this ballgame. He will have to go play and play well. I continue to be impressed with how Arian Foster works and improves. He is making a significant difference in our season, along with the wide receivers who all of us had doubts about at the beginning of the season.
???To win, we will have to play well as a team and play smart. That means protecting the football, limiting their big plays, playing well in the kicking game and playing well fundamentally.???
