ATHENS, Ga. ??? The University of Tennessee women???s soccer team fell to Georgia, 3-0, in the final match of the regular season on Friday night at Turner Soccer Complex. The Lady Vols fall to 13-3-2 overall and 8-2-1 in Southeastern Conference play. The loss marks just the third time this season that the Orange and White have been shut out.
???Georgia played great tonight,??? UT Head Coach Angela Kelly said. ???They executed their game plan and played with a ton of emotion.???
Georgia struck first in the 38th minute, when a defensive miscue left the ball for freshman forward Marah Falle just inside the penalty box. Falle then fed sophomore forward Carrie Patterson who went one-on-one with UT junior keeper Jaimel Johnson, beating the keeper to her right side on the ground.
The first half saw the Bulldogs out-shoot Tennessee 5-2, while both keepers made one save apiece. Georgia earned three consecutive corner kicks in the first three minutes of the match, setting the tone early in the half. The Bulldogs had several good scoring opportunities in the half, hitting the post once and missing just wide right on a free kick just outside the box.
The Bulldogs found the back of the net again in the 60th minute, getting another score from inside the six-yard box. Falle and Patterson teamed up again, with Patterson putting a cross into the box and Falle finishing on one touch from five yards out.
Even with the 2-0 lead, Georgia continued to pressure the Lady Vol midfield and defense. Just 10 minutes after the second goal, Patterson nearly scored again putting a shot through traffic in the box which was saved by Johnson just in front of the goal line.
The Bulldogs hit iron twice after taking the 2-0 lead, with freshman midfielder Mariah Krase heading a ball off the post in the 73rd minute and Patterson hitting the crossbar with under five minutes remaining.
Following the miss off the crossbar, a scramble in the box resulted in the third goal for Georgia. Patterson struck again, getting an assist from freshman midfielder Traci Dreesen on a rebound and notching her team-leading 11th goal of the season.
The Bulldogs out-shot UT 19-8 overall, putting seven shots on goal and forcing Johnson to make four saves in just her third loss of the season. The Lady Vols notched eight shots, putting three on goal. The match marks just the second time this season that UT has allowed more than two goals.
???I want to congratulate [Georgia Head Coach] Patrick Baker and his staff for a great performance and great season thus far,??? Kelly said.
Sophomore midfielder Mick Imgram led Tennessee with four shots, while juniors Sarah Van Sickle and Alissa VonderHaar notched the Lady Vols??? only shots on goal.
The loss knocks the Orange and White out of contention for the Eastern Division and overall regular season titles; however the Lady Vols will be watching the result of the Florida-Vanderbilt match in Gainesville, Fla. on Sunday which will determine their seed in the SEC Tournament. A Florida loss or tie will give Tennessee the No. 2 seed, while a Gator win will the Orange and White the No. 3 seed.
The Orange and White return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 7 in the first round of the conference tournament in Orange Beach, Ala. Tennessee???s opponent and game time will be determined following the completion of the regular season on Sunday.
