Help Call a Time Out on Domestic Violence
October 04, 2007 | Football
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Verizon Wireless and the University of Tennessee (UT) Athletics Department invite you to help curb domestic violence in the Knoxville community.
Fans attending UT athletic events during the month of October can donate their no-longer-used
wireless phones and accessories to the Verizon Wireless HopeLine?? program. Drop boxes will be located at fan information booths in Neyland Stadium gates 1, 10, 21 and 22, as well as Vol Village before any home football game.
"In an effort to educate Tennesseans about the issue of domestic violence, and bring attention to National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we are asking Tennessee fans to donate their old cell phones to HopeLine," comments Chris Fuller, Associate Athletic Director - Sales and Marketing, for the University of Tennessee Athletics Department. "Phones collected will go directly to Knoxville area shelters and agencies that support victims in need, including Legal Aid of East Tennessee."
Through the HopeLine program, no-longer-used wireless phones, batteries and accessories in any condition from any service provider are recycled, or refurbished and sold. Verizon Wireless uses the proceeds to award grants and refurbished wireless phones with airtime to non-profit human services and law enforcement agencies to aid victims of domestic violence.
Verizon Wireless customers across the country donated a total of 910,000 no-longer-used wireless phones to HopeLine in 2006, resulting in donations of nearly $1.3 million in cash grants and more than 16,000 HopeLine phones with airtime and other features to domestic violence organizations and shelters. Tennesseans donated 24,000 phones to HopeLine in 2006.
In addition to the month-long phone collection at the University of Tennessee, wireless phones and equipment can be donated year-round at any Verizon Wireless Communications Store nationwide.
