Other Nov. 10 SEC games on television include Auburn at Georgia (CBS, 3:30 p.m. ET) and Florida at South Carolina (ESPN, 7:45 p.m. ET). The Vanderbilt-Kentucky and the Louisiana Tech-LSU games were not picked up by any network.
OVERTIME RACKS THE NERVES, BUT VOLS USUALLY PREVAIL
Tennessee???s 27-24 victory Saturday over South Carolina marked the Vols sixth overtime win against only one loss. And as for the Gamecocks, now 0-2 since the overtime format began in 1996, it might be time to try a new venue.
Both South Carolina losses in extra sessions have come at Neyland Stadium. UT topped the Gamecocks 23-20 in 2003.
Conference foes Arkansas (6-1), LSU (6-3) and Mississippi (6-5) also own six overtime wins, but only Arkansas matches the Vols??? .857 winning percentage in the extra frames. Other won-lost records in overtime for SEC schools are: Alabama 3-7, Auburn 3-5, Florida 2-2, Georgia 4-2, Kentucky 2-2, Mississippi State 2-3, South Carolina 0-2 and Vanderbilt 1-4.
Tennessee???s overtime wins have come against Florida (20-17) in 1998, Arkansas (41-38) in 2002, South Carolina and Alabama (51-43) in 2003 and LSU (30-27) in 2005. The Arkansas game went six overtimes, while the win over Alabama took five. All other games have been decided in the first overtime, including Tennessee???s loss in 2000 to LSU by a 38-31 count.
Nationally, Northwestern stands 8-1 in overtime, Missouri is 8-3 and Texas A&M is 7-4. Schools with six overtime wins are the SEC quartet along with North Carolina State (6-4), Oregon (6-3) and UCLA (6-1). Best perfect records in overtime belong to Army, Louisiana-Monroe, Michigan, Nebraska and South Florida, all at 5-0.
InSIDe the Vols -- Saturday???s rally past Carolina kept Tennessee from the dubious distinction of tying its largest lead relinquished in a loss ... UT also led 21-0 at halftime of the 1984 Sun Bowl against Maryland, only to watch the Terrapins storm back for a 28-27 victory ... Ironically, the 2005 Vols trailed LSU 21-0 at the half in the famous Monday night, post-Katrina affair in Baton Rouge ... Just as South Carolina did Saturday night, the Big Orange rallied for a 24-24 regulation tie, won the overtime coin toss, elected to play defense and held the home side to a field goal ... The difference in the two games was Tennessee???s 2005 drive for the winning touchdown, and the 2007 Vols defense holding the Gamecocks to two yards on their possession before the missed 40-yard field.
INTERVIEW OF COACH PHILLIP FULMER BEFORE LOUISIANA-LAFAYETTE GAME SATURDAY AT KNOXVILLE
1. When the outcome is doubtful, the Vols have a remarkable knack for pulling out a win, as they did Saturday. Explore this characteristic.
A - "I'm proud of the team. They understand a game isn't over until it's over. LaMarcus Coker got us started with his kick return when we trailed by three on our last possession. And then, to beat South Carolina in overtime, that will give our team a big lift."
2. It's a thread that runs through Vol history, but how important is it to have a kicker you can depend on like Daniel Lincoln?
A - "Daniel is a great story, a young man who was not highly recruited. But he has worked really hard. I used some of the old George Cafego techniques on him early in his career, and he has responded by being like Jeff Hall and some of the others at Tennessee who go back a long, long way. He has become very consistent. I especially like him because he played a position in high school where he had to block and tackle. He's got some toughness."
3. Getting ready for the stretch run of the 2007 season, where would you like to see the Vols shore up for the remainder of the season?
A - "This team has some shortcomings, but the desire and toughness and spirit are part of these guys' fabric. They understand how to adjust. We need to make progress everywhere that will allow us to be successful."
4. A festive occasion, Homecoming, how can Vols alumni and fans returning to campus help the football team Saturday?
A - "They need to be loud and proud. They encouraged us Saturday and made it tough on South Carolina by being loud. It was encouraging to experience the support on the Vol Walk."
5. Tell about the Louisiana-Lafayette team the Vols face as their Homecoming foe Saturday (4 p.m. Eastern).
A - "They played the heck out of a South Carolina team we just beat. Offensively, they are dangerous with a good quarterback. They are hard to stop. Defensively, they are multiple and tough to handle. We need to make sure our focus is on the game, despite the fact that's it's not an SEC opponent."
