Q&A With Coach Phillip Fulmer
October 22, 2007 | Football
1. Now that the Vols have experimented with Sunday practice, what do you see as the benefits, considering it gives the team Monday off?
A - "I like it. We also tried Sunday practice, with Monday off, during the open date. We can review our mistakes and get the tape out of the way. We wanted to put the Alabama game behind us as quickly as possible, and as a staff and as a football team, move on to South Carolina. So far, so good. Check with me again Saturday night."
2. In this unusual year for college football, especially in the SEC, can it be said that whatever happens can't be too surprising anymore?
A - "It's been an amazing year in college football. You wouldn't think with two losses you would still have a shot at the division championship with a month to go, but we do. We'd have to take care of business and maybe get a little bit of help."
3. What is the outlook this week at wide receiver, where injuries have taken a toll on the Vols' offense?
A - "We hope that Lucas Taylor will be a week better. With turf toe, he couldn't finish the Alabama game, but he was able to practice Sunday. And Josh Briscoe will be day-to-day."
4. What is at stake in the SEC Eastern Division when Tennessee plays host to South Carolina Saturday?
A - "Both of us are in the mix for the Eastern Division championship, so you have a game that is crucial, both schools coming off tough losses. We want to get back on the right track. It's also a good traditional rivalry."
5. Tell about the offensive effectiveness of the South Carolina team as two veteran SEC coaches, you and Steve Spurrier, match tactics.
A - "He does a great job offensively, throwing the ball all over the field. His timing system is also tough to defend. They have runners and receivers to make it very challenging."
