Practice Photos Tennessee began its preseason practice camp for 2006 Friday with a workout of better than two hours in the Neyland-Thompson Sports Center. A severe thunderstorm and ensuing flash flood that began just before Friday's scheduled start of practice forced the Vols indoors.
"That was an incredible storm," head coach Phillip Fulmer said. "We had to get everything moved from the baseball field in a hurry and then the lights went off in here. But we got everything done we wanted to get done.
"The first day of practice and in shorts, that makes it hard to say too much. We are in pretty darn good shape, that's obvious. A couple of times during practice we lost our focus, but I saw us get it back."
Fourteen freshman signees joined Tennessee's returning veterans. Fulmer said he still is awaiting word from the NCAA Clearinghouse on Stephaun Raines of Dalton Ga., and Gerald Williams of Lauderdale Lakes, Fla.
The Vols coach said another signee, Justin Garrett of Baton Rouge, La., would not be joining the squad this season. Instead, four veteran non-scholarship players -- junior offensive lineman Michael Frogg, junior defensive back Ben Greene, senior defensive tackle Matt McGlothlin and senior tailback David Yancey -- were awarded scholarship status Friday.
"All four have helped us in one way or another and I'm really pleased to be able to do that," Fulmer said.
The Vols practice again Saturday in helmets and shorts before adding shoulder pads for Sunday's session. Tuesday marks the team's first day in full pads.
"They're all here and they're all in shape," Fulmer said.
The Vols have 23 practice sessions, including three official scrimmages, scheduled through Aug. 26. Tennessee opens its 2006 playing season with a Sept. 2 date against California at Neyland Stadium.
