Tennessee head coach Phillip Fulmer on Monday awarded scholarship status to seniors Ryan West and Stanley Asumnu, making the announcement after the Vols' morning workout at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
"I'm very pleased to award scholarships to Ryan and Stanley," Fulmer said. "They earned them and definitely will help the team this season."
West, a 6-3, 250-pounder, owns two varsity letters for his efforts as punting deep snapper in 2004 and 2005. The Brentwood native has appeared in 17 games for the Vols.
Asumnu, who stands 6-5, 205 pounds, was a spring practice addition to the team at wide receiver after completing a four-year playing career with the basketball Vols. The Houston, Texas, product appeared in 113 games with 33 starts, finishing with 535 career points.
Fulmer was pleased with the effort Monday morning, saying the team appeared upbeat and eager for Tuesday's final scrimmage of the preseason.
"The coaches brought an intensity and an energy to practice that followed our scrimmage Saturday," he said. "The effort definitely was good.
"From a fired up standpoint, I think we're making significant progress. From a focus standpoint, we had too many mistakes on both sides and that was emphasized today. Being better fundamentally was our theme for the day."
Tennessee hosts California on Sept. 2 in a 5:30 p.m. Eastern time kickoff.
