At least 10 national television appearances and home games against four teams that appeared in the Elite Eight of the 2006 NCAA Tournament highlight the 2006-07 University of Tennessee basketball schedule that was announced today.
Tennessee will be making at least 10 appearances on national television, the most in school history. The Vols' previous high for scheduled national television appearances was seven in 2000-01. UT will play at least seven games on the ESPN family of networks, two games on CBS and one on ABC. Additionally, Lincoln Financial Sports (formerly known as Jefferson Pilot Sports) will regionally televise six of the Vols' games. Bob Kesling and Bert Bertelkamp return for their eighth season together calling each of Tennessee's games for the Vol Radio Network.
The schedule includes home contests against defending national champion Florida, Final Four participant LSU and Elite Eight qualifiers Texas and Memphis. In all, the Vols will play 13 teams that are coming off postseason bids.
Additionally, Tennessee will participate in the NIT Season Tip-Off for the first time since the 1992-93 season. UT will travel to the Gaylord Entertainment Center in Nashville to meet Fordham in the first round of the tournament and will then face either Belmont or UNC-Wilmington in the second round. The winner of the Nashville region will advance to New York's Madison Square Garden in the NIT Season Tip-Off semifinal and championship doubleheaders, November 22 and 24.
"We are trying to become a perennial top 25 program," said Bruce Pearl, who led the Vols to a 22-8 overall record and the SEC Eastern Division championship in 2006. "We are trying to do in men's basketball what we do in all sports at Tennessee, and that is compete for championships. In order to do that, you have to play the best. The schedule may be a little too tough for this young team but it is where we want to go."
In addition to 16 regular season home games, UT will play four games in Nashville. After playing two games at the Gaylord Entertainment Center for the NIT Season Tip-Off, the Vols will return to the facility to meet Oklahoma State on Dec. 18. Tennessee will play its fourth game in Nashville when the Vols visit Vanderbilt Jan. 10.
New season ticket orders are currently being taken online at UTsports.com and by calling the UT Ticket Office at (865) 656-1200. Season ticket renewals will be mailed in the coming days.
UT Athletics has been working to increase the opportunity for families to enjoy Tennessee basketball. This year, the Vols will offer a Family Plan for tickets in section 312 at $80 per season ticket ($5 per game) with a minimum of four tickets purchased. Non-renewable season tickets in the 300 level (sections 302-308) have been reduced this year to $154 from the price of $178 a season ago. Single-game tickets will go on sale in October. Non-conference game tickets (not including Texas and Memphis) are $8 each while SEC and the Texas and Memphis games are $15 each.
