VOLS' COACH LOOKING FOR NEXT CONTRIBUTORS

Tennessee wrapped up practice work for the week with an abbreviated session Friday inside the Neyland-Thompson Sports Center. During the 90-minute workout, UT's staff inserted final preparations for Saturday's first full scrimmage at Neyland Stadium.
"We came out and tried to make today like a Wednesday of game week," head coach Phillip Fulmer said. "We made preparations for Cal but in today's case for ourselves as well. We had a lot of looks at a lot of things. Everything's geared toward the scrimmage."
Fulmer particularly was pleased with the team's efforts over the last couple of days.
"If we can make the same kind of progress into the scrimmage, we will have taken a big step."
Tennessee lost 11 starters -- five offense and six defense -- from a year ago. With three weeks remaining until the 2006 opener, Saturday's game situations could go a long way toward answering early camp questions.
"There are a number of guys who could be significant contributors on this team if they will just take that next mental step," Fulmer said. "For some, it might be maturity; for some, an understanding of football at this level. And for some, it might be a position change and xs-and-os."
The Vols host California Sept. 2. Kickoff is set for 5:30 p.m. Eastern time.
