The Tennessee baseball team hosts Western Carolina Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. Admission to the game is free, as the contest was a late addition to the schedule following some early-season rainouts. It is one of just five home games remaining on the Vols' regular-season schedule.
Tennessee (27-20, 9-14 SEC) is coming off a home series win over Vanderbilt last weekend during which the Vols' pitching staff was superb. During the three-game series, UT pitchers recorded 22 strikeouts to just three walks. Tennessee owns a 20-9 home record this season, including a 5-3 mark in midweek games. Senior catcher/designated hitter Kelly Edmundson is UT's top hitter in non-conference contests, as he boasts a .413 average at the plate with 31 hits and 20 RBIs.
The Catamounts (27-21, 13-11 SoCON) travel to Knoxville having won three of their last four games. Offensively, WCU is led by sophomore outfielder Steven Strausbaugh. A Freshman All-America and last year's Southern Conference Freshman of the Year, Strausbaugh is batting .355 with 59 hits, 16 home runs and 51 RBIs. Western Carolina is batting .301 as a team with a 5.78 staff ERA.
Junior right-hander Deunte Heath (3-2, .512 ERA) will start on the mound for Tennessee Wednesday, while Western Carolina has yet to announce its starting pitcher.
Tennessee leads the all-time series against the Catamounts 15-5, dating to 1954. Under 17th-year skipper Rod Delmonico, UT holds a 10-1 edge vs. WCU, including victories in each of the last seven games in the series. The Cats' last win over UT came in Knoxville in 1995 by a score of 3-1.
