WEST WINDSOR, N.J. - In their first full team appearance in program history, the Tennessee rowing team opens the 2006 NCAA Rowing Championships on Friday morning on Mercer Lake outside of the Finn Caspersen Rowing Center. Events start for the Orange and White with the First Eights, who race in Heat 3 at 8:30 a.m.
The Lady Vols bring the ninth-ranked Varsity 8+ crew in the country to the Garden State, the same group that downed five other ranked shells during the Aramark Central/South Region Sprints two weekends ago. The crew looks to top last year's eighth-place showing, the program's best finish at the national championship regatta. Junior Molly Oellerich (Arlington, Va.) will cox the crew consisting of junior Renee Brittle (Dublin, Va.), senior Lauren Wells (London, Ontario), sophomore Krista Gearing (Fenwick, Ontario), freshman Erin-Monique Shelton (Upper Hutt, New Zealand), juniors Rachel Mayberry (Woodbridge, Va.) and Kristen Galloway (Knoxville, Tenn/Farragut) and sophomores Nina Dobratz (Portland, Ore.) and Jessica Ayers (Alpharetta, Ga.).
The First Eight drew the fifth lane in Heat 3, going against Boston University, UCLA, California and Washington State. Tennessee already faced the Bruins and Cougars earlier this year at the Stanford Invitational, dropping races to both of the Pac-10 teams.
UT's Second Eights and Fours shells swapped a person prior to the start this weekend. Junior Stephanie Davis (Martin, Tenn.) will command the second Varsity 8+, which will have sophomores Genevieve Collins (Dallas, Texas) and Mary Jones (Huntsville, Ala.), senior Beth Schwartz (Columbia, Tenn.), freshman Alex Shishkov (Mississauga, Ontario), junior Heather Hill (Knoxville, Tenn./Catholic), sophomore Leah Smelser (Macon, Ga.), freshman Sara Becker (San Diego, Calif.) and junior Katrina von Peters (Chattanooga, Tenn.) powering it.
Starting in the first lane, the 2V8+ will race Princeton, California, Ohio State, Stanford and Washington State in the first heat. The Lady Vols downed Princeton in their last regular-season meet but fell to the Buckeyes, Cardinal and Cougars during the spring.
The Big Orange's Fours crew is made up of juniors Steppie Williams (Collierville, Tenn.) and Sarah Hutcheson (Orlando, Fla.), freshmen Caroline Howell (Davenport, Iowa) and Kate Brownlee (North Gower, Ontario) and sophomore coxswain Kelly Todd (Oak Ridge, Tenn.). They will be in the fifth lane in Heat 1, going against Yale, Washington, Brown, Ohio State and Notre Dame. The crew only faced the Buckeyes during the year, falling to them in Columbus in April.
Racing begins for Division I at 8 a.m. with the First Eights Heat 1. The Lady Vols will race at the following heats and times: First Eights Heat 3, 8:30 a.m.; Second Eights Heat 1, 10 a.m.; Fours Heat 1, 11 a.m.
