Tennessee catcher J.P. Arencibia was named the Southeastern Conference Baseball Player of the Week Monday after helping lead the Volunteers (30-21, 11-15 SEC) to a road series win at South Carolina last weekend. Arencibia hit .571 (8-for-14) on the week while driving in seven runs and scoring five times.
The Miami, Fla., native's solo home run in the ninth inning of UT's nationally-televised, series-clinching victory over the Gamecocks Saturday provided the winning margin. He finished that game 2-for-4 with three runs scored as the Vols won 8-7.
It was Arencibia's defense that stood out in the series-opener, as he perfectly fielded a pair of bunt attempts and finished off a rare 5-3-2 double play at third base to extinguish a South Carolina scoring threat.
He leads the Vols with 46 RBIs this year; 24 of those have come during SEC play.
Arencibia is the first UT player to win SEC Player of the Week honors this season, while shortstop Tony Delmonico (April 17) and pitcher Josh Lindblom (Feb. 20) have each earned SEC Freshman of the Week acclaim.
