After the second day of competition Friday at the SEC outdoor championships in Fayetteville, Ark., Tennessee stands in second place with 23 points, 13 behind host Arkansas. Tennessee's co-captains Jim Sexton and Chris Helwick won the first two events scored at the Razorbacks' brand-new John McDonnell Field, and freshman Richard Wooten finished seventh in the hammer throw to contribute two more points to the Vols' team total. Ben Lukowski finished eighth in the 10,000 to cap the scoring for the day. Yarrick Kincaid ran a personal-best time during the preliminaries of the 800 meters and advanced to Sunday's final.
"We had a good day," head coach Bill Webb said. "We opened the meet with two SEC champions and two lifetime bests in the first two events. Helwick and Sexton winning were obviously the highlights, but Lukowski stepped up and scrapped for a point. Kincaid added our third personal-best performance while advancing to the finals of the 800 and Rubin (Williams) ran good in the 200.
Arkansas scored 32 points in the 10,000, which was a few more than we expected, but we will come out tomorrow and compete.
Sexton won the hammer with a throw of 206 feet, 6 inches and Helwick won the decathlon with a season-best score of 7,765 points. Wooten recorded a personal-best measurement of 189-4 in the hammer, which bettered his previous personal best of 181-8, to place himself eighth on the Vols' all-time top-10 list and qualify for the mideast regional in the event. Wooten is also regionally qualified in the shot put. Ben Lukowski finished the scoring for the Vols, finishing eighth in the 10,000 with a time of 30:18.00. Kincaid finished the 800 in 1:49.88, lowering his personal record and finishing fourth to qualify for the final, which is scheduled to begin Sunday at 7:50 p.m. Central Time.
Helwick began day two of the decathlon with an 82-point lead over Darion Powell of LSU. After finishing fourth in the 110 hurdles in a personal-best time of 15.02 seconds and third in the discus with a throw of 137-11, the five-time All-America from Greeley, Colo., found himself 29 points behind Powell with three events left. Helwick cleared 15-9 in the pole vault to re-take the lead by one point, and threw the javelin 195-4 in the ninth event of the decathlon. Heading into the final event, the 1,500, he trailed Powell by 18 points. Helwick won the 1,500 in a season-best time of 4:33.96 to jump back into first place and successfully defend his 2005 decathlon conference title.
Freshman Nick Panezich finished 10th in the hammer throw with a personal-best throw of 179-4 and missed qualifying for the finals by just two inches.
Panezich extended his personal record with all three of his throws during the preliminaries. Senior Tim Nguyen finished 11th after recording a throw of 172-8. Matt Piccarello ran to a ninth-place finish in the 10,000, clocking 30:30.40. Rubin Williams advanced to finals in the 200 with a 21.15 clocking during the preliminaries to finish sixth. Carjay Lyles finished 15th in the preliminaries of the 400 hurdles with a time of 55.40.
Day three of the 2006 SEC outdoor championships starts at 5 p.m. Central Time with the long jump and shot put. Also on tap for Saturday are the preliminaries of the 1,500, 110 hurdles, 400 and 100. The steeplechase final will wrap up the day's festivities and is scheduled to start at 9:30 p.m.
