The Tennessee men's track and field team sits in third place with 29 points after three days of competition in Fayetteville, Ark., at the SEC outdoor championships. The Vols trail host Arkansas, which leads the meet with 47 points, and Florida, second with 30 points. Saturday saw Tennessee add six points to its overall team score and qualify nine athletes for three finals to be contested Sunday. The Vols also recorded two personal-best times and four season-best performances.
"We qualified well today," head coach Bill Webb said. "We are pleased that we have nine guys qualified in three events for tomorrow. You can't score if you don't make the finals, so today was big. We are going head-to-head against Arkansas, Florida and LSU for the conference title. It will take an exceptional day from us in order to win and all four teams have a chance at the championship."
Richard Wooten and Zach Sabatino provided the scoring for Tennessee Saturday. Sabatino finished the steeplechase in 8:53.20 to finish fourth. Wooten, who finished seventh in the hammer on Friday, became the first Vol to score in two events during these outdoor championships by producing a mark of 55 feet, 4 3/4 inches and finishing eighth in the shot put.
Damond Campbell and Jeff Day lowered their personal-best times while advancing to the finals of the 110-meter hurdles and 1,500, respectively. Campbell finished his preliminary run with a clocking of 14.02 seconds, which bettered his previous lifetime-best effort by one-tenth of a second. Day also qualified seventh with a time of 3:48.25, one second faster than his previous personal-best time.
Rubin Williams ran to a season-best time in the 100 and qualified first for the final in a time of 10.42. Matthieu Pritchett finished the 100 with a season-best time of 10.50, and Jonathan Wade finished his first 100 of the season in 10.58 to give the Vols three lanes in Sunday's final. Tennessee reserved three positions in the final of the 1,500 as well. Dusty Miller ran a season-best time of 3:50.63 to join Day and junior Tyler DeVault in the final. DeVault, who owns UT's best time in the event this season, won his heat and qualified second overall. Senior Eric Pierce, after fouling on his first two attempts, provided a season-best, wind-legal measurement of 23-6 3/4 on his final jump to finish 11th in the long jump.
Along with Campbell, Aries Merritt and Drew Brunson qualified for the finals of the 110 hurdles. Merritt clocked the best overall time of the three heats, finishing in 13.49, while Brunson qualified fifth with a time of 14.00, just two-hundredths of a second off his personal-best time.
Freshman Nick Panezich finished 12th in the shot put with a measurement of 51-3. Doug Brown finished 14th and Day crossed the finish line 15th in the steeplechase, while Chris Platt finished 22nd in the 1,500. Jacob Dennis ran the 400 in 48.15 to finish 21st.
Sunday will be the busiest day of the meet, as 585 points will be awarded among the 15 finals scheduled for the last day of the championships. Tennessee has 11 runners qualified for finals, in addition to the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams and eight runners entered in the 5,000, plus 12 athletes competing in field events Sunday. The day begins at noon Central Time with the discus. The 4x100 relay will kick off the running events at 6:10 p.m. and the 4x400 relay will decide which teams earn the final points of the meet beginning at 9:35 p.m.
