The Tennessee baseball team opens a four-game road swing Tuesday with a trip to Cookeville, Tenn., to face in-state foe Tennessee Tech. The contest will be played at Averitt Express Baseball Complex and is slated to begin at 7 p.m. ET. The Volunteers hold a 62-27-1 all-time record against this member of the Ohio Valley Conference.
Tennessee has a 21-15 (5-9 SEC) record on the season, including a March 21 home win over the Golden Eagles. The Big Orange banged out 14 hits, including home runs from freshmen Cody Brown and Jarred Frazier and junior Chris Siewert. The Vols scored 21 runs on their way to a "run-rule" victory in seven innings.
The Volunteers are coming off their first SEC series win of the season after taking two of three from Florida last weekend. Complete-game wins by junior right-hander Craig Cobb and sophomore left-hander James Adkins, along with stellar offensive play by freshman shortstop Tony Delmonico and sophomore centerfielder Julio Borbon, propelled the Vols to the series victory. Delmonico's play earned him SEC Freshman of the Week honors.
Tennessee Tech has a season record of 13-24 (6-6 OVC) and is coming off a series win of its own against Austin Peay last weekend. Tech is led offensively by junior outfielder Josh Goodwin, who is hitting .310 with 22 RBIs in the heart of the Golden Eagles' lineup.
Taking the mound Tuesday night for the Volunteers is junior Deunte Heath (2-2, 5.02 ERA). Heath is making his seventh start of the year and first since a home start against ETSU March 29. His last appearance came Sunday against Florida, during which he pitched a 1-2-3 top of the ninth with two strikeouts.
The Vols own a 4-4 record in midweek games this season and are averaging nearly nine runs in those contests - nearly three runs more than their overall season average.
