Tennessee shortstop Tony Delmonico was named the Southeastern Conference Freshman Baseball Player of the Week Monday after helping lead the Volunteers (21-15, 5-9 SEC) to a series win over Florida last weekend in Knoxville. Delmonico hit .500 (4-for-8) against the Gators while also boasting a team-high .636 on-base percentage.
The Knoxville native and former Farragut High School standout went 3-for-4 with a pair of bunt hits in Saturday's 2-1 triumph. One of his bunt singles advanced the game-winning run into scoring position, helping the Vols clinch their first SEC series win of the year.
Delmonico currently leads the SEC with an amazing .471 batting average and .542 on-base percentage in league play. He has also started in all but one of UT's 36 games this season.
Delmonico joins fellow frosh Josh Lindblom (Feb. 20) as Tennessee's 2006 SEC Freshmen of the Week honorees.
