Tennessee men's tennis player Bobby Cameron was named SEC Player of the Week Tuesday after clinching both of UT's wins over higher-ranked teams this past weekend. Cameron's victories came against the nation's 39th and 115th ranked players.
"Bobby is extremely deserving of this honor," head coach Chris Mahony said. "He played an unbelievable weekend of tennis and led by example from the top of the lineup. His results are a direct reflection of the work he's been putting in. (Assistant) Coach Woodruff and I are now looking for a consistent week-to-week intensity and work ethic from Bobby."
Cameron started off the weekend by battling back to defeat Florida's Greg Ouellette 4-6, 6-0, 7-5. The win at No. 1 singles clinched the match for UT over the 5th-ranked Gators. Ouellette is ranked No. 39 in the Fila singles' rankings and is the highest ranked player Cameron has ever beaten collegiately. Friday night's match marked the third time the two players have met collegiately and is Cameron's first victory over Ouellette.
The UT sophomore on Sunday once again battled to a three-set win over South Carolina's 115th-ranked Tom Eklund 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. The victory gave Tennessee a 4-1 win and its second consecutive victory over a higher-ranked opponent. Cameron now owns an overall singles record this season of 13-9 and is 7-3 at the No. 1 position in dual-match play.
Cameron also went undefeated at doubles this past weekend with partner Kaden Hensel. The two UT sophomores clinched the doubles point for the Vols in the South Carolina match with an 8-6 victory over Pedro Rodrigues and Yevgeny Supeko. The Tennessee tandem is 11-2 overall this season and 5-1 at the No. 2 position in dual-matches.
Cameron is the first Volunteer to receive player of the week honors since Mark Dietrich earned the distinction for the week beginning March 3, 2003.
