Another round of scrimmage work highlighted Tennessee's seventh practice of the spring, a 2 1/2-hour session Tuesday at Haslam Field. This time, the defense turned the tables on UT's offense and had the better of things under the watchful eye of head coach Phillip Fulmer.
"I think the defense took the challenge a lot more than our offense did," Fulmer said. "In the Saturday scrimmage, the offense made a few plays. Today, it was embarrassing to watch. The guys need to take the challenge for Thursday's practice.
"In spring practice, one side's going to do well one day and the other the next day. Offensively, I don't think we took the challenge today. We made a few plays, but from an intensity standpoint we did not take the challenge. And there were some guys on defense who did not play very well Saturday but who took the challenge from the coaches and made a difference today."
Among Tuesday's work was offensive situations inside their own 10-yard line and punting.
"The best thing we did today was run the ball, and that's OK," Fulmer said. "If that's what we're going to be, that's what we'll be. I'd like to see us do a lot more from a consistency standpoint."
Tennessee's Thursday workout marks the halfway point of spring before the Vols take 10 days off for spring break.
