Tennessee concluded an abbreviated off-week of practices with a one-hour workout Thursday inside the Neyland-Thompson Sports Center. UT's players and coaches have the weekend to themselves after compiling a 5-1 record and top-10 national ranking over the season's first half.
"I think this (open week) came at a very good time for us," head coach Phillip Fulmer said. "We're getting a chance to get some good players healed who were a little banged up in the last ballgame and we accomplished that.
"We have assets and liabilities. I hope we have addressed some of our concerns with our coverage teams and with our pad leverage on both sides."
Tennessee, 1-1 in SEC play, has three home games remaining and three on the road -- all against conference competition. The Vols host Alabama, LSU and Kentucky, and visit South Carolina, Arkansas and Vanderbilt.
"We have a six-game stretch here where we can beat any one of those teams but any one of those teams can beat us," Fulmer said. "The teams that improve during the course of the season are the ones that have the best chance to be successful."
The team reconvenes Sunday night to begin preparations for Alabama week. Kickoff a week from Saturday is set for 3:30 p.m. Eastern time.
"The guys need a little bit of a break," Fulmer said. "They're young people and probably a little bit mentally tired. I think we'll come back as a fresh, rejuvenated football team. We'll be in pads on Monday and Tuesday, so we're going to get right back into the attitude that we've had and not take anything for granted whatsoever."
