SUMMITT GOES FOR WIN NUMBER 900 AGAINST VANDERBILT THURSDAY
THE GAME The #1-ranked Tennessee Lady Vols (17-0, 3-0 SEC) are on the road for their second of four consecutive games traveling to cross-state and SEC rival #19-ranked Vanderbilt (13-4, 2-1 SEC) in a Thursday night match-up on FOX Sports on Jan. 19 in Nashville. Lady Vol coach Pat Summitt will be going for her 900th collegiate win. Summitt is just one win away from collecting 900 career victories...Her 2004-05 squad finished third in the NCAA Final Four Championships with a 30-5 overall record and were the SEC Tournament Champions... This season, UT returned eight letterwinners, two redshirt freshmen and welcomed one newcomer ...The 2005-06 season marks the Lady Vol debut for redshirt freshmen Candace Parker and Alex Fuller who sat out last season rehabbing their left knees...True freshman, #21 Lindsey Moss, a 6-0 guard from Alpharetta, Ga., is seeing her first action this season...UT's team dropped to 10 players when starting sophomore point guard Sa'de Wiley-Gatewood left the squad on Dec. 19, 2005... THE 4-1-1 ON THE COMMODORES The #19-ranked Vanderbilt Commodores (13-4, 2-1 SEC) return to the friendly confines Memorial Gymnasium on Thursday, Jan. 19, hosting top-ranked Tennessee at 7 p.m. CT. The game can also be seen on Fox Sports Net South. In their last outing, Carla Thomas scored all of her 16 points in the second half to lift #23/21-ranked Vanderbilt to a 67-59 win over the South Carolina Gamecocks (9-7, 0-4 SEC) on Jan. 15 in Columbia, S.C. Thomas got two fouls less than four minutes into the game and sat until the second half. She quickly got on the scoreboard after halftime with two inside shots and a three-point play that put the Commodores up 42-36 with 14:58 remaining. Then, after South Carolina tied things at 42, Thomas hit three consecutive short jumpers to close out an 18-7 run that put Vanderbilt ahead 60-49 with 1:22 to go. Vandy guard Dee Davis added 15 points -- 10 of those in the first half -- for Vanderbilt, which has won five of its last six games. South Carolina continued its struggles in the SEC, starting 0-4 in the league for the third straight season. Thomas also had seven rebounds while Davis finished with six assists. OUR SCHEDULE THIS WEEK... The Lady Vols will face #19-ranked Vanderbilt on Thursday on the road and step out of SEC play for the last time until 2006 postseason action visiting #2-ranked Duke for a 1 vs. 2 match-up in an ESPN2 "Big Monday" game on Jan. 23. SEC normalcy returns next week with a Thursday, Jan. 26 game at Kentucky (Rupp Arena) and a Sunday game in Knoxville facing Alabama on Jan. 29. LADY VOLS ON TV A record 21 Lady Vol regular season regional/national games are slated for television this season. UT is 10-0 on TV so far. SCHEDULE UPDATE The UT-Vandy game in Knoxville on Feb. 12 will be a 5:30 p.m. tip-off on ESPN2. ON THIS DAY Tennessee is 9-1 in their history when playing on Jan. 19. The Lady Vols are 5-0 at home, 4-1 on the road, and 0-0 on neutral courts. Last time out on the 19th, the Lady Vols defeated Auburn, 81-71, on The Plains in 2005. LOOKING BACK Last year at this time, the Lady Vols were 12-3 and had just defeated Vanderbilt, 79-65, in Nashville on Jan. 16. SUMMITT GOES FOR HER 900TH WIN TONIGHT It hardly seems possible that it's been three years and five days since Lady Vol Coach Pat Summitt collected her 800th career victory on January 14, 2003 - an anxious and anticipatory 76-57 win over #25/24 DePaul at home. As the last seconds ticked down, the crowd chanted, "800, 800, 800!" The post game activities featured a giant "8-0-0" cake, balloons, flowers, fireworks and the presentation of the game ball. That set of 100 wins (700-800) took three years and 38 days. Tonight, against #19-ranked Vanderbilt, Summitt will get her first shot at her 900th coaching win. The chances?? Well, she collected wins #100, 400, 700 and 800 on the first attempt. However, her first-ever collegiate victory and wins #200, 300, 500 and 600 were all thwarted on the first try by ranked adversaries. PARKER NAMED SEC PLAYER AND ROOKIE OF THE WEEK Tennessee Lady Vol rookie Candace Parker has earned the double honor of being named the SEC Player and Freshman of the Week (Jan. 9-15). Parker led Tennessee to victories over No. 13/17 Georgia and Mississippi St. last week. The redshirt freshman from Naperville, Ill., averaged 21.0 ppg, 10.5 rpg, 4.0 apg and 1.5 spg in the two games. She connected on 67 percent of her field goals (16-24) and 83 percent of her charity tosses (10-12). In 65 minutes of playing time, she committed just one miscue. She poured in a career-high 26 points against Georgia. She earned Philips Player of the Game honors for her performance, which included 10 rebounds and a career-high five assists. Parker garnered Philips Player of the Game honors against Mississippi State as well, with a team-leading 16 points, 11 rebounds, three steals and one block. The 6'4" forward ranked second in blocked shots, seventh in scoring and sixth in rebounding in the SEC. In each of those categories, she is the top-ranked freshman. She also stands in the top-10 in field goal percentage (9th) and free-throw percentage (10th). BEST STARTS TO A SEASON Currently at 17-0 to start the 2005-06 campaign, this is the second-best run all-time to open the season. Of the 13 perfect starts to a Lady Vol season (of at least 7 wins), the run was stopped with a loss to a BIG EAST team on four occasions (UConn three times and Rutgers once) and an SEC team (Auburn) once.
ON THE RADAR SCREEN - DUKE Duke returns to ACC play on Thurs., Jan. 19, hosting N.C. State, then steps out of conference play to face #1-ranked Tennessee at a sold-out Cameron Indoor Stadium on Jan. 23. In their last outing, Duke coach Gail Goestenkors registered her 350th career victory as the #2-ranked Blue Devils (17-0, 5-0 ACC) defeated Holy Cross, 84-36, on Jan. 16. Duke, playing its fourth game over the last nine days and continued their second-best season opening start in school history with their 17th straight victory. Blue Devils Abby Waner scored 17 points, as Wanisha Smith added 15, Monique Currie 13 and Alison Bales 13 points 11 boards) DU rallied from its lowest point total of the season (66 vs. #22 Boston College). Duke used a full court press in the game's opening minutes, as they took a 19-4 lead after four minutes. Smith had nine points in the run. Duke hit 12 of its first 14 shots in taking a 32-6 lead. Conversely, in their 66-52 win over BC, the Blue Devils missed 20 of their first 25 shots. Against Holy Cross, Duke led 51-16 at halftime. The Blue Devils opened the second half like the first, using a 17-3 run to take a 69-24 lead with just under 12 minutes left. Sophomore Chante Black did not play due to a sore left foot. GAME REPORT 18 - VANDERBILT The "No Love Lost" SEC rivalry between Tennessee and Vanderbilt continues today for the 52nd time with a meeting at the Memorial Gymnasium in Nashville, Tenn. Under the direction of coach Melanie Balcomb, the Commodores are 13-4 overall and 2-1 in the SEC this season. Liz Sherwood, a 6-4 sophomore center who transferred from UConn, leads the Commodores with 14.4 ppg and 4.5 rpg. TENNESSEE-VANDERBILT All-Time Series Meetings
VU SERIES TIDBITS Tennessee and Vanderbilt have a storied past. This will mark the 52nd meeting between these SEC foes. UT has played Vandy 31 times since 1994. No other team has recorded as many back-to-back games with the Lady Vols in single seasons since UT played Old Dominion home-and-home and in the postseason (practically every year) in the late 1970s and early 80s. Though the Lady Vols possess a dominant 45-6 advantage in the overall series, the last several years have brought a more competitive match-up as UT has edged Vandy 11-2 in the past 13 meetings. Vanderbilt and Tennessee met in the SEC's tournament finals twice with UT winning in 1994 and VU triumphing in 1995. Overall, UT is 7-2 in postseason meetings with Vandy. FIFTY IS NIFTY Vanderbilt became the first opponent to face UT more than 50 times in a series. LADY VOLS VS. COMMODORES STAT COMPARISON
OUR LAST MEETING VERSUS VANDERBILT The second-seeded and No. 5/4-ranked Tennessee Lady Vols held off a late rally by third-seeded Vanderbilt and advanced to the Southeastern Conference Tournament championship game with a 76-73 victory over the Commodores at the Bi-Lo Center in Greenville, S.C., on March 5, 2005. UT moves on to face top-seeded and top-ranked LSU in the title tilt, marking the 16th time in the program's history that the Big Orange has appeared in the SEC championship game. VU jumped out of the gates first and took a 10-5 lead at the first media timeout. Leading by six, 18-12, with less than 12 minutes remaining in the opening stanza, the Lady Vols exploded on a 16-3 run, capped off by a pair of Brittany Jackson three-pointers, to take a 28-21 advantage. Vanderbilt was able to cut the margin to just one, 32-31, but the Orange and White scored the half's final four points to take a 36-31 lead into the locker room. Following the intermission, Tennessee connected on its first three shots and took a 10-point lead after a three-pointer by Shanna Zolman. With UT ahead by 11 points, 54-43, with 12:56 remaining, the Commodores rattled off a 12-2 spurt and cut the margin to a single point, 56-55. The Big Orange answered, though, as Alexis Hornbuckle connected on three consecutive buckets to push the lead to seven. However, VU would not go away easily and cut the lead to one point once more, 74-73, with 1:43 showing on the clock after Abi Ramsey sank one of her five three-pointers. Tennessee's Tye'sha Fluker then hit a layup to go up by three, and Vanderbilt missed a pair of shots from beyond the arc that would have tied it as UT hung on to advance. The Lady Vols were paced by four players in double figures scoring: Zolman (18), Jackson (15), Hornbuckle (14) and Ely (11). Both teams posted outstanding stats from beyond the arc, as UT hit 53.8 percent (7-13) of its attempts, while VU sank 52.4 percent (11-21). UT AND VANDY RANKED MEETINGS IN 2005-06 The Lady Vols game against #19 Vanderbilt will mark Tennessee's ninth game versus a ranked team this season. UT is 8-0 when facing the nation's best teams. Meanwhile Vanderbilt will be meeting its third ranked opponent in #1 Tennessee. UT defeated #9 Michigan State, #10 Maryland, #16/18 Texas, #12/11 Stanford, #22/21 Temple, #12/11 Notre Dame, #7 Connecticut, and #13/17 Georgia. Vanderbilt is 0-2 against ranked teams this season falling to then #5/5-ranked North Carolina and then #20/18-ranked Arizona State. LAST MEETING IN NASHVILLE The No. 8/10-ranked Tennessee Lady Vols rallied back from a 15-point first half deficit to defeat No. 17/15 Vanderbilt, 79-65, before a crowd of 9,651 at Memorial Gym in Nashville, Tenn., on Jan. 16, 2005. With the victory, UT has now triumphed over the Commodores in each of the last seven meetings and extended its SEC regular season winning streak to 36 games. Early on, it was all Vanderbilt as the Black and Gold connected on their first nine shots from the floor to build a 14-point lead, 24-10, at the 12:37 mark. Following the second media timeout, however, the Lady Vols narrowed the margin to just eight after a pair of three-pointers by Brittany Jackson. VU responded with a 7-0 spurt to take its biggest lead of the game, 31-16. Determined not to be put away easily, Pat Summitt's squad charged back with a 13-0 run, capped by a pair of Tye'sha Fluker free throws, and trailed by just two with a little more than five minutes left in the opening half. UT would even the score with a three-pointer by Sa'de Wiley-Gatewood as the buzzer sounded, and the teams went to the locker room with the contest knotted at 37 apiece. Following the intermission, neither team was able to make a significant run as the margin was no more than four points in favor of either side through the opening 12 minutes. However, the Big Orange finally pulled ahead by utilizing a full-court press and rattled off a 13-0 run to lead 72-59 with 3:56 remaining. Vanderbilt would get no closer than nine points the rest of the way as UT sealed the 14-point victory. The Lady Vols were led by a quartet of players in double figures: Shanna Zolman (20), Alexis Hornbuckle (16) and Fluker and Jackson (14). Fluker's total equaled a career high, and she just missed out on a double-double by equaling a career high in rebounds with nine. ONCE, TWICE, THREE TIMES... UT and Vandy have met three times in a season on eight different occasions. VANDY HAS NEVER WON IN K-TOWN Four of Vandy's wins in the series have come at Memorial Gymnasium on the Nashville campus, while two of the Commodores six victories over UT have come on neutral courts in the SEC Tourney. The closest Vanderbilt has come to claiming a win in Knoxville in 20 meetings was a two-point loss on Feb. 26, 1984, 74-72, in Stokely Athletics Center on the UT campus. Other near misses include a three-point loss in 1996 and a four-pointer on 2-22-01. HOW MANY GAMES? There will be some discrepancy in the game notes as to the records for UT and Vandy in the all-time series. The Lady Vols records show that the first game between the two teams was played on Jan. 18, 1976 in Nashville. Tennessee won the contest, 96-27. Counting that game, UT has a 45-6 lead over the Commodores in the all-time series CAREER STATS VS. VANDERBILT Returning Lady Vol career statistics versus Vanderbilt can be found on p. 68 in the 2005-06 Tennessee media guide. Senior Shanna Zolman has proven that she enjoys playing against Vanderbilt, as she owns an 14.0 points per game career average versus the Commodores and hits on 44% of her treys against the SEC rivals. Sophomore Alexis Hornbuckle is the second-leading scorer (12.0 ppg) and has connected at a .583 clip against the instate rivals. Hornbuckle also busts the boards for 5.7 rpg against the Black & Gold. UT-VANDY SERIES RANKINGS Typically, going into the Tennessee versus Vanderbilt match-up, the Lady Vols have entered the contest as the higher ranked team. In fact, in the last 32 meetings dating back to Jan.30, 1993, the Commodores have been ranked higher just six times. Going into that memorable oversold game on the Nashville campus in 1993, Vanderbilt was ranked number one while the Lady Vols were a step behind at #2. TURNSTILE HEAVEN Tennessee and Vanderbilt love to attract the crowds on their campuses when the two teams meet. Here are all of the attendance averages dating back to 1986-87 season. KNOXVILLE TOTAL (AVG.) --15 games - 225,062 (15,004); NASHVILLE TOTAL (AVG)--17 games - 193,497 (11,382); NEUTRAL TOTAL (AVG)--8 games- 60,168 ( 7,521). Largest gatherings: 21,968 in Knoxville 2/22/01, 15,317 in Nashville 1/30/93 and 11,182 in Memphis 3/3/01. LET'S GO SEE THE CIRCUS Lady Vol basketball has that "circus charm" to it again this season. Already, George Washington, Stanford, Temple, Notre Dame, South Carolina and Mississippi State (UT's six road games) have posted new attendance records or season high attendance records. Duke announced an advance sell-out for the Jan. 23 game when UT comes to town. The coffers have fared well - ticket prices when UT came to town almost doubled the price of a normal ducat at many venues. Notre Dame was an advance sell-out, too. A normal ticket at Vanderbilt for women's hoops is $10.50 for anyone but Tennessee - the Commodores charge $20.50 to see the Lady Vols play. CASE IN POINT - MISSISSIPPI STATE'S CROWD FOR UT Prior to Tennessee's game at Mississippi State on Jan. 15, the Lady Bulldogs had attracted 4,778 fans through the turnstiles at eight home games for an average of 597 fans. The UT-MSU game alone attracted 3,618 spectators to the contest practically doubling State's home attendance for the year. NBA MADNESS STOPPED In back-to-back games against #7-ranked Connecticut and #13/17-ranked Georgia, top-ranked Tennessee's defense took a hit giving up 80 and 85 points, respectively. The Lady Vols won both contests but were chastised by Coach Pat Summitt for "living on the edge defensively." It comes as no surprise that defense and rebounding, Summitt staples for 32 years, found a top priority entering the game at Mississippi State. The Lady Vols allowed 56 points on 37% shooting, while forcing 21 turnovers. HIT OVER 100,000 AGAINST GEORGIA With a good crowd (13,772) against #13/17 Georgia on Jan. 12, the Lady Vols went over the 100,000 fan mark at home. To date, 113,361 fans have been counted in eight Lady Vol home games. This marks the 12th consecutive time UT has hit at least 100,000 fans per season at home dating back to 1994-95. DOESN'T SEEM LIKE IT HAS BEEN 3,325 DAYS Georgia was the last to do it. Happened 3,325 days ago. Really! 3,325 days...Almost 10 years. The Tennessee Lady Vols have rattled off 62 consecutive SEC home wins in Thompson-Boling Arena since Dec. 8, 1996, when Georgia was the last team to hang an SEC home loss on the Lady Vols. The Lady Bulldogs prevailed 94-93 in overtime and the 62-game win streak began with a "w" over Kentucky, 84-61, on Jan. 12, 1997, in the very next home SEC game. SEC TWOSIES The SEC plays a 14-game regular season schedule with each team playing everyone in the league once, a natural rival twice and designated rotating teams from the SEC East and West once extra time. The Lady Vols face Vanderbilt twice each season as its natural rivals and this year faces Georgia and Alabama twice. LADY VOLS: THE BEST AND THE WORST OF 2005-06
TENNESSEE has led in the first half of every game... LADY VOL WEEKLY GAMES, RECORD, POLLS
2005-06 LADY VOL LINE-UP COMBINATIONS During the 2005-06 season, Tennessee has used four starting lineups --
TENNESSEE'S BEST LINE-UP COMBO After Fall exams had concluded, Lady Vol Coach Pat Summitt was considering tinkering with the line-up a little bit more. When Sa'de Wiley-Gatewood announced that she was leaving the team on Dec. 19, prior to the Princeton game, Summitt went back to the season opening starting five of Candace Parker, Nicky Anosike, Tye'sha Fluker, Shanna Zolman and Alexis Hornbuckle. However, Fluker's production as a reserve had become a real key to success, so Sidney Spencer earned the starting nod as a player who presents match-up problems for the opposition. The combination of Parker, Spencer, Anosike, Zolman and Hornbuckle has played the last seven games together and fashioned a 7-0 record. UT'S OFFENSIVE FIREPOWER In all games, this is how Tennessee has shot from the field: 50%FG: Princeton (.597), Georgia1 (.565), Texas (.549), ODU (.520), Temple (.509), Miss State (.500); 40%FG: Chattanooga (.477), LaTech (.466), GWU (.462), Mich. The Lady Vol bench has outscored the opponent bench 11 times and outrebounded them 11 times. UT HAS NATION'S BEST RPI - FOURTH IN STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE (2005-06 Opponents in Bold; as of Jan. 17, 2006)
TOP SPOT - IN BOTH POLLS The Tennessee Lady Vols remained in the No.1 spot in the Associated Press poll on Jan. 17. The poll of Dec. 26 marked the 100th time in Head Coach Pat Summitt's career that the Lady Vols were ranked number one. The Lady Vols are off to a perfect 17-0 start. In the Dec. 5 AP poll, the Lady Vols were voted #1. It marked the first time since the second poll of the 2004-05 season that Tennessee has held the top spot in women's college hoops. The AP poll, now in its 30th year, celebrated poll number 500 in the first week of this season. Tennessee is on a run of 368 consecutive appearances in the poll. The 13th week of the 1984-85 season marked the last time a Summitt squad was not ranked. The Lady Vols have been unranked only 14 times in 509 polls. Summitt has guided the program to a poll-best 369 top-five appearances. Louisiana Tech, with 279 weeks in the top-five, ranks second. In the Nov. 28 poll, Duke led by seven points even though Tennessee had a 22-21 edge in first-place votes. THE ESPN/USA TODAY POLLING PLACE In the first USA TODAY/ESPN poll of the year on Nov. 1, the Lady Vols began the 2005-06 season as the number one ranked team in the country. It marks the 25th time in 30 years that UT has started the season in the top five in the nation. LAST LOSS TO AN UNRANKED TEAM? When is the last time Tennessee lost to an unranked team? That would have been to LSU on Mar. 2, 2002 at the SEC Tournament in Nashville, Tenn. LSU had been in and out of the Top 25 polls in late January and February. Prior to that, UT's last loss to an unranked team was five years previous (to the day) losing to Auburn on Mar. 2, 1997 at the SEC Tournament in Chattanooga, Tenn. 495 GAMES VERSUS RANKED TEAMS Tennessee's game versus #13/17 Georgia on Jan. 12, 2006 was the Lady Vols' 495th all-time versus a ranked team since the inception of the polls in 1976. UT is an amazing 353-142 (.703) versus ranked teams. This year, Tennessee is 8-0 versus ranked teams. In 2004-05, the Lady Vols were 10-5 vs. ranked teams. UT'S RANKED RECORD WHEN #1 The Lady Vols have played 90 ranked opponents while they were the nation's number one ranked team. UT holds a 70-20 advantage in those games. SEC STANDINGS
AGAINST THE SOUTHEASTERN CONFERENCE Tennessee owns a 353-54 record all-time record vs. 12 teams from the Southeastern Conference. The Lady Vols maintain a winning record against every team in the SEC. UT IS AMAZING AT HOME VERSUS THE SEC Since Tennessee began contesting games with Southeastern Conference opponents, the Lady Vols have produced a 146-9 record in all games played at home. Only four SEC teams have ever managed a victory over the Lady Vols in Knoxville - Auburn, Georgia, Kentucky and Ole Miss. Georgia has won three games on UT's turf while Auburn, Kentucky and Ole Miss have registered two wins each. Georgia is the only team to defeat UT at home in the 1990s - the Lady Bulldogs turned the trick in 1991 and 1996. No SEC team has defeated UT at home in the 21st century. WOW--12 SEASONS OF AT LEAST 10 SEC VICTORIES In the win over South Carolina on Feb. 17, 2005, Tennessee claimed its 10th SEC victory of the year. The Lady Vols have now registered double-digit victories in conference play an incredible 12 times. Since the 1991-92 season when SEC play expanded, the Lady Vols have won at least 10 games in the following years: 1992-10 games, 1993-11 games, 1994-11 games, 1995-11 games, 1998-14 games, 1999-13 games, 2000-13 games, 2001- 14 games, 2002- 13 games, 2003- 14 games, 2004-14 games and 2005- 13 games. SNAPPED AT 42 -- CONSECUTIVE SEC WINS With the loss to LSU on Feb. 10, 2005, the Lady Vols 42-game consecutive regular season SEC win streak was halted. Until the loss to LSU, the Lady Vols had not lost an SEC regular season game since at Vanderbilt on Feb. 2, 2002, 76-59. 62 CONSECUTIVE SEC HOME WINS With the victory over Georgia on Jan. 12, 2006, the Lady Vols have won 62 consecutive SEC home games. The last SEC loss at home was to Georgia on Dec. 8, 1996, 94-93 (OT). SEC LEAGUE PLAY UT owns a league best record of 231-30 against all SEC teams dating back to 1983. THIS IS AMAZING From 1980-1997, the Lady Vols claimed a total of six SEC regular season titles in 17 years. From 1998-2004, Tennessee captured seven consecutive SEC regular season crowns producing an amazing 109-4 record. UT's only league losses were to Vandy, Georgia and LSU (twice) during this stretch. CROWDED HOUSE The attendance at the Tennessee versus Connecticut game in Knoxville on Jan. 7, 2006, set a new record for Thompson-Boling Arena with 24,653. The Lady Vols also own the record for the most spectators at a regular season collegiate women's basketball game with that tally. It's the fifth largest crowd to ever watch the Tennessee Lady Vols play behind Final Four "dome" crowds of 29,619 (vs. UConn, San Antonio, Texas, Mar. 29, 2002), 28,937 (vs. Michigan State, Indianapolis, Ind., April 3, 2005), 28,210 (vs. UConn, Atlanta, Ga., April 8, 2003) and 28,210 (vs. Duke, Atlanta, Ga., April 6, 2003). DUKE ANNOUNCES A SELL-OUT The Duke University Athletics Ticket Office announced that the Jan. 23 game between the Blue Devils and Tennessee at Cameron Indoor Stadium is sold out. It marks the third time in Duke's history that a women's basketball game has sold out in advance for the 9,314-seat Stadium. Duke had its first two capacity crowds in back-to-back years hosting UConn on Feb. 1, 2003 and UT on Jan. 24, 2004. The Lady Vols are 15-0 and ranked #1 in the nation. Noteworthy: Tennessee went over 100 points in an NCAA playoff game for the first time ever in 1993-94 with the win over North Carolina A&T, 111-37. The 1987-88 team hit triple digits in seven games leading the NCAA. IN OVERTIME The Lady Vols are 24-12 all-time in overtime games. The most OT games in a year was tied in 2003-04 with four as the Lady Vols went 3-1 in overtime losing to Georgia, 68-66, and defeating Auburn, 68-61, DePaul, 96-89, and Stanford, 70-66. It tied the mark set in 1996-97, when the Lady Vols were 3-1 in overtime contests losing to Georgia, 94-93, and defeating Texas, 68-65, Vanderbilt, 92-79 and LSU, 100-99. UT's 22 points in the OT against Florida (2-3-05), was the most ever scored by the Lady Vols in a single overtime. AN OT STORY Before the Lady Vols piled up four overtime games in the 2003-04 season, OT contests were few and far-in-between. The Jan. 4, 2003, overtime contest with Connecticut, was the first time Tennessee was involved in an extra stanza game since the 1996-97 season when the Lady Vols played a then-record four overtime affairs. PECK'S THE ONLY ONE The roll call goes like this: Sylvia Hatchell, Sharon Fanning, Jane Albright, Lea Henry, Nancy Darsch, Trish Roberts, and now Mickie DeMoss. etc., UT coach Pat Summitt has faced many former players and assistant coaches in a variety of games thru the years but Carolyn Peck, currently at Florida, is the only one to record a victory over her former boss. While at Purdue, Peck handed Summitt a 78-68 loss on Nov.15, 1998 in the State Farm Tip-Off Classic in West Lafayette, Ind. The defeat snapped UT's 46-game consecutive winning streak (that was second only to Louisiana Tech's all-time 54-game winning streak). ALL TV, ALL THE TIME There's no excuse not to catch the Lady Vols over the next 12 games. Only one contest will not be televised at Ole Miss (Feb. 2). All remaining games will be televised. Fortunately, not too often. The Tennessee Lady Vols have had a very uncharacteristic week in back-to-back wins over Connecticut and Georgia at home. It marks the first time, maybe ever, that Tennessee has surrendered 80 points in consecutive games and won. UConn tagged UT for 80 points in the Lady Vols 89-80 victory on Jan. 7, 2006. In the very next game, Georgia rung up 85 points as Tennessee won 94-85 on Jan. 12, 2006. In 2004-05, two opponents managed over 80 points against UT - Florida in overtime, 82 - and Alabama with 81 in regulation - both Tennessee victories. DePaul's 89 points tallied on Dec. 17, 2003, was the highest point total scored on the Tennessee Lady Vols since Mar. 1, 1997, when UT and LSU were in a basket-for-basket shoot-out in the SEC Tournament semifinals as the Lady Vols won 100-99 in overtime. Since 1999, the Lady Vols have been tagged for 80+ points by the opposition 14 times. Connecticut leads the scoring fest with six games in the 80s, while Florida has tallied two and DePaul, Vanderbilt, LSU, Georgia, Alabama and Xavier have turned in one 80+ game each. In these games, UT was 9-5 when the opposition scored 80+ points.
