TENNESSEE-MISS STATE All-Time Series MeetingsTENNESSEE leads 24-0
MSU SERIES TIDBITS T ennessee leads the series with Miss. State, 24-0. The two teams began their series during the 1985-86 season at Starkville. The closest meeting between the two teams was the 2003 SEC match-up won by the Lady Vols, 76-75, on a Kara Lawson buzzer-beater.COACHING NOTES MSU head coach Sharon Fanning was a graduate assistant under Pat Head Summitt during the 1975-76 season. Fanning is one of over three dozen former players, graduate assistants or assistant coaches who have landed collegiate head coaching jobs after their days at Tennessee.AVERAGE SCORE T he average score of a UT-MSU game is 83.2 to 71.4. The Lady Vols average margin of victory is 11.8 points. However, in the two games between UT and MSU in 2000, the average victory margin was 74.5 to 71.0, in the 2002 season's only meeting it was a two-point affair, 80-78 in 2004 it was a 14-point game in Knoxville but a buzzer-beater in the SEC Tourney. Last season, UT won by 22 at home.CAREER STATS VS. MSU Shanna Zolman is the only Lady Vol with career double-digit success against Miss. State averaging 11.6 ppg. Entering the 1996-97 season, three SEC teams had never posted a win over the Lady Vols -- Arkansas, Florida and Mississippi State. In that 10-loss national championship season, two of the three picked off the Lady Vols -- Arkansas grabbed a 77-75 win in Fayetteville on Dec. 29, 1996 and Florida turned the trick, 71-62, on Jan. 21, 1997 in Gainesville for the first times ever.LADY VOLS VS. LADY BULLDOGS STAT COMPARISON
OUR LAST MEETING VERSUS MISSISSIPPI STATE Senior Shyra Ely scored a game-high 27 points as the fifth-ranked Tennessee Lady Vols closed out their regular-season home slate with a 78-56 victory against Mississippi State on Feb. 24, 2005 -- Senior Night at Thompson-Boling Arena. Ely's impressive performance marked the second consecutive game in which she had posted a stellar offensive effort, as she came up just short of tying her career high with 30 points in the win at Arkansas. The triumph over MSU extended UT's regular season SEC home court winning streak to 61 contests. While it was Mississippi State that got on the board first with a bucket by Doceide Warren, the Big Orange answered with a 9-0 run to take an early lead. The Lady Bulldogs cut the margin to just two moments later, however, 13-11, before UT answered the challenge with a 7-0 spurt, capped by a Tye'sha Fluker putback, to go ahead by nine points. With 4:46 remaining in the opening half, MSU drew within one point again, 26-25, but the Orange and White scored the stanza's final six points to take a 32-25 lead into the locker room. Following the intermission, Mississippi State scored two quick buckets to narrow the advantage to just four, but Tennessee responded with a 7-0 run, capped by an Ely layup off an assist by Loree Moore, to take its first double-digit lead of the game, 39-28. While the Lady Bulldogs charged back with a 10-2 run to cut the margin to just three with 13:52 showing, UT put the game away with a pivotal 19-4 run to go ahead by 20 points, 68-48. MSU would get no closer than 16 points the rest of the way as the Lady Vols sealed the 22-point victory. In addition to Ely, UT got strong performances from Fluker and Shanna Zolman, who scored 13 and 12 points, respectively. Additionally, Nicky Anosike nearly totaled a double-double with a 10-rebound, eight-point performance.SUMMITT TO BE ON SEC TELECONFERENCE ON TUES. JAN. 17 Coach Pat Summitt will be available on the SEC Teleconference on Tuesday, January 17 from 12:24 -12:31 p.m. ET, during which she will discuss the January 19th game at Vanderbilt. Summitt will also take part in her weekly teleconference on Friday, January 20 from 11:20 - 11:50 a.m. ET. She will discuss the January 23rd game against Duke. Call the UT Media Relations Office for the access numbers for both conference calls.OUR LAST MEETING IN STARKVILLE Despite a fierce rally late in the second half in which Mississippi State cut the #5 Tennessee Lady Vols' 19-point lead to just four with less than a minute to play, UT held off MSU for a 61-53 victory on Jan. 11, 2004 in Starkville, Miss. UT improved its record to 12-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play. Additionally, the Big Orange now holds a 22-0 advantage in the all-time series against the Lady Bulldogs. The contest began with both teams struggling to find their shot, as Pat Summitt's club connected on just one of its first nine shots, slightly worse than Mississippi State's 1-for-7 start. Trailing 6-2 at the first media timeout, Tennessee responded with an 8-2 run that included three consecutive buckets by senior Ashley Robinson to take a 10-8 lead at the 11:48 mark. After some sloppy play by both teams, the Lady Vols closed the half on a 12-2 run to take a 27-16 lead at the break - in large part to MSU's 19 percent shooting (6-32). The 16 points were the second-fewest allowed by UT in the first half this season. The Lady Bulldogs struck first in the second frame as Tan White hit a 3-pointer, but Tennessee went on a 9-0 run to push the lead to 17 points, 36-19, following a jumper by junior Loree Moore with 15:31 remaining in regulation. After keeping the advantage seemingly safe - ahead by 15 points with just 5:21 left - Mississippi State utilized a number of UT's season-high 25 turnovers to close the gap to just four, 53-49, with 1:04 on the clock. However, the Lady Vols were steady from the charity stripe, hitting 8-of-8 (6-of-6 by sophomore Shanna Zolman) to keep their perfect SEC record intact. Zolman was the Orange and White's only double-digit point scorer (17), while Moore, and classmates Shyra Ely and Brittany Jackson each chipped in with seven points. Ely led the squad in rebounding with 10 and Moore snatched eight. On the afternoon, the Lady Vols hit just 40 percent of their shots but held the opposition to 33 percent shooting. Tennessee also controlled the boards, 43-38.DOESN'T SEEM LIKE IT HAS BEEN 3,321 DAYS Georgia was the last to do it. Happened 3,321 days ago. Really! 3,321 days...Almost 10 years. The Lady Bulldogs prevailed 94-93 in overtime and the 62-game win streak began with a "w" over Kentucky, 84-61, on Jan. 12, 1997, in the very next home SEC game.UT'S OFFENSIVE FIREPOWER In all games, this is how Tennessee has shot from the field: 50%FG: Princeton (.597), Georgia1 (.565), Texas (.549), ODU (.520), Temple (.509); 40%FG: Chattanooga (.477), LaTech (.466), GWU (.462), Mich. In the Dec. 5 AP poll, the Lady Vols were voted #1. It marked the first time since the second poll of the 2004-05 season that Tennessee has held the top spot in women's college hoops. The AP poll, now in its 30th year, celebrated poll number 500 in the first week of this season. Tennessee is on a run of 367 consecutive appearances in the poll. Summitt has guided the program to a poll-best 368 top-five appearances. Louisiana Tech, with 279 weeks in the top-five, ranks second. It marks the third time in Duke's history that a women's basketball game has sold out in advance for the 9,314-seat Stadium. Duke had its first two capacity crowds in back-to-back years hosting UConn on Feb. 1, 2003 and UT on Jan. 24, 2004. The Lady Vols are 15-0 and ranked #1 in the nation. The Blue Devils are ranked second in the nation.LET'S GO SEE THE CIRCUS Lady Vol basketball has that "circus charm" to it again this season. Already, George Washington, Stanford, Temple, Notre Dame and South Carolina (UT's five road games) have posted new attendance records or season high attendance records. Duke announced an advance sell-out for the Jan. 23 game when UT comes to town. The coffers have fared well - ticket prices when UT came to town almost doubled the price of a normal ducat at many venues. Notre Dame was an advance sell-out, too.SPEAKING OF ECONOMIC IMPACT The UT Women's Athletics Department has released the dollar figures on the income generated from the Tennessee versus Connecticut game in Knoxville on Jan. 7. The 1987-88 team hit triple digits in seven games leading the NCAA.IN OVERTIME The Lady Vols are 24-12 all-time in overtime games. UT's 22 points in the OT against Florida (2-3-05), was the most ever scored by the Lady Vols in a single overtime.AN OT STORY Before the Lady Vols piled up four overtime games in the 2003-04 season, OT contests were few and far-in-between. While at Purdue, Peck handed Summitt a 78-68 loss on Nov.15, 1998 in the State Farm Tip-Off Classic in West Lafayette, Ind. The defeat snapped UT's 46-game consecutive winning streak (that was second only to Louisiana Tech's all-time 54-game winning streak).ALL TV, ALL THE TIME There's no excuse not to catch the Lady Vols over the next 13 games. Only one contest will not be televised at Ole Miss (Feb. 2). All remaining games will be televised.100TH NUMBER ONE RANKING The Associated Press poll of Dec. 26, 2005, marked the 100th #1 ranking all-time for the Lady Vols. HOW MANY TIMES HAS TENNESSEE GIVEN UP OVER 80 POINTS? Fortunately, not too often. The Tennessee Lady Vols have had a very uncharacteristic week in back-to-back wins over Connecticut and Georgia at home. It marks the first time, maybe ever, that Tennessee has surrendered 80 points in consecutive games and won. UConn tagged UT for 80 points in the Lady Vols 89-80 victory on Jan. 7, 2006. In the very next game, Georgia rung up 85 points as Tennessee won 94-85 on Jan. 12, 2006. In 2004-05, two opponents managed over 80 points against UT - Florida in overtime, 82 - and Alabama with 81 in regulation - both Tennessee victories. DePaul's 89 points tallied on Dec. 17, 2003, was the highest point total scored on the Tennessee Lady Vols since Mar. 1, 1997, when UT and LSU were in a basket-for-basket shoot-out in the SEC Tournament semifinals as the Lady Vols won 100-99 in overtime. Since 1999, the Lady Vols have been tagged for 80+ points by the opposition 14 times. Connecticut leads the scoring fest with six games in the 80s, while Florida has tallied two and DePaul, Vanderbilt, LSU, Georgia, Alabama and Xavier have turned in one 80+ game each. In these games, UT was 9-5 when the opposition scored 80+ points.
