Knoxville, Tenn. - Tennessee Lady Vol basketball star Sidney Spencer has been named the Lady Vol Athlete of the Week after carrying her team to an 89-80 victory over Connecticut on Jan. 7. Spencer edged swimmer Vicky Linnell and thrower Ariel Brooks for the honor.
A native of Hoover, Ala., Spencer guided the Lady Vols to victories last week over Old Dominion, SEC foe South Carolina and arch rival Connecticut. The 6-3 forward averaged 12.7 points and 4.7 rebounds per game in the three contests. She contributed eight assists, two blocks, one steal and just two turnovers in an average of 32 minutes of playing time.
Against Connecticut, Spencer connected on all five of her three-point attempts, tying for the best three-point percentage in program history. She was also perfect from the line, sinking all four attempts and scored a career-high 21 points against the Huskies.
Spencer stands in 18th place in the Lady Vol record books for three-pointers made in a career (38). Her career percentage from beyond the arc (40.0) is the fifth best in school history. Her accuracy this season (54.1) is the highest in program annals and her free throw percentage (95.5) this year is second only to teammate Shanna Zolman in the single-season record books.
The No. 1 Lady Vols host No. 13 Georgia at 7 p.m. on Thursday night in Thompson-Boling Arena. The Lady Bulldogs are the eighth ranked opponent on the Tennessee schedule thus far in the season.
