Tennessee head coach Phillip Fulmer said after Thursday's practice that freshman defender Gerald Williams likely will not play for the 2005 Vols because he has not been approved for competition by the NCAA Clearinghouse.
"He's probably going to have to go home," Fulmer said. "(Friday) is really the last possible day if we were to get something new to happen, but it looks like he's probably going to go home.
"The clearinghouse issue hasn't been cleared up. It may be cleared up in two days, five days, six months, I don't know. If it's just a couple of days he could come right back, but if it's too long he'll have to wait and come in January."
Williams is a 6-4, 226-pound prospect from Lauderdale Lakes, Fla.
"It's tough on him," Fulmer said. "He looks like he's going to be a really good player and he's just a fabulous young man. It's just a shame but it's in the clearinghouse's hands. They say they have a lot of backed up cases and things to do."
