FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The University of Tennessee volleyball team (7-4, 1-1 Southeastern Conference) fell to LSU (12-1, 2-0 SEC) in three games, 30-26, 30-24, 31-29, on Sunday morning at the University of Arkansas campus. The contest took place in Fayetteville due to the effects of the hurricanes.
For the contest, sophomore outside hitter Yuliya Stoyanova (Sofia, Bulgaria) led all players with 19 kills, tying her career high, and hit .333 (19-7-36). Sophomore middle blocker Joselyn Johnson (Muncie, Ind.) led Tennessee in hitting percentage at .417 (7-2-12). Also contributing offensively were junior outside hitter Kelsey Fautsch (Chisago Lakes, Minn.), who hit .263 (9-4-19), and freshman outside hitter Mindy Flynn (Louisville, Ky.) with her .231 average (5-2-13). Senior middle blocker Kristen Andre (Kelseyville, Calif.) contributed eight kills.
Senior libero Amy Morris (Michigan City, Ind.) set the Lady Vol pace in digs with 14, while senior setter Julie Knytych (LaGrange Park, Ill.) had eight and Stoyanova tallied six. Johnson led the Big Orange in blocks with four.
LSU took the first game after not relinquishing the lead once, even though the Lady Vols kept the game close, never trailing by more than four. In the second game, Tennessee grabbed its largest advantage at 8-5, but a 6-0 later run by the Tigers earned LSU a 12-10 advantage. After Stoyanova earned a kill later in the game to tie the contest, 21-21, LSU scored eight-of-nine points to take a commanding 29-22 lead on its way to the 30-24 win.
In the third game, LSU took a 2-1 lead, its final one until the very end of the game. From the time that the Lady Vols tied the game, 2-2, the Big Orange did not relinquish the lead and had its biggest advantage of three on seven occasions. After Tennessee scored the second of two straight points for its largest lead at 28-24, LSU scored seven of the final eight points to claim the game and match, including the final five.
"I was very disappointed in our overall play today, especially our lack of focus, as evidenced by a number of unforced errors that we had," Head Coach Rob Patrick said. "We had a good game plan going into the match, but we didn't execute as well as we needed to. We had Joselyn, Milan (Clarke) and Mindy get a lot of playing time this weekend, which I hope will help us the rest of the season.
Tennessee returns to the road on Wednesday, taking on its first top-10 opponent of the season in No. 7 Louisville at 7:30 p.m. Following that match, the Lady Vols play their only two home matches from Sept. 11-Oct. 20. Ole Miss takes on the Big Orange at 7 p.m. on Friday, while Mississippi State plays UT at 1:30 p.m. next Sunday.
