Looking back on an exciting senior season 40 years ago this fall, former Vol linebacker Frank Emanuel was enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame in ceremonies Aug. 13 at the College Hall of Fame in South Bend, Ind.
Joining 16 other players and three head coaches as enshrinees, Emanuel told Dana Jacobson, co-host of ESPN2's Cold Pizza, during his interview segment that, when he found out about his induction, "I felt like I was going into a game. I started getting butterflies when I read the letter."
Emanuel was the leader of the 1965 Tennessee defense, one that led the way to an 8-1-2 record, giving up 98 points in 11 games, 34 against UCLA and 64 to the other 10, and playing in the school's first bowl game since 1957. In Doug Dickey's second season in Knoxville, the resurgent Vols were "back" in a big way, and Emanuel's defensive leadership was a big factor. The 1965 group is one of the revered teams in the history of Tennessee football.
"Being enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame brought back memories of an exciting time in my life," he said.
He told Jacobson that he learned some significant leadership lessons from his time at Tennessee.
"We have a responsibility and an obligation to give back to our community," Emanuel said. "It's very important to be a leader."
Emanuel was also honored in the August 15, 2005, issue of Sports Illustrated, highlighting his "dominant senior season" at Tennessee, his selection to the College Hall of Fame, and his leadership in his local community.
