KEENE, N.H. -- Playing as a member of the USA Baseball National Team, Tennessee catcher J.P. Arencibia went 2-for-3 with a home run during a 7-0 victory Sunday night over the Keene Swamp Bats of the New England Collegiate Baseball League. Team USA improved to 2-0 with the win, while Arencibia's solo homer was his first long ball of the summer.
Sunday's game marked Arencibia's first action with the National Team, which completes its three-game tour of the NECBL with a contest against the Newport Gulls Monday at 6:30 p.m. ET. The Americans then travel to Japan to participate in the 34th annual USA vs. Japan Collegiate All-Star Series. Team USA will be looking to capture the series overseas for the first time since 1979.
The five-game series with Japan takes place July 7-12 in Osaka, Kumano and Tokyo.
FORMER VOLS ALLEY, HEADLEY PERFORMING WELL AS PRO TEAMMATES
Former Tennessee players Josh Alley and Chase Headley have each made solid professional debuts as members of the Eugene Emeralds (Class A affiliate of the San Diego Padres). Headley boasts the club's top batting average, while Alley ranks second on the team.
A two-year UT letterman at third base (2004-05), Headley recently joined the Emeralds and has only played in three games. However, he is batting .429 with six hits after leading the Southeastern Conference in batting average during the 2005 season.
Alley roamed the Vols' outfield for three seasons (2003-05) and is now batting .387 through his first eight games as a professional. He has collected 12 hits and five RBIs with three doubles and seven runs scored.
Eugene is off to an 8-5 start this season.
