DURHAM, N.C. -- Tennessee baseball player J.P. Arencibia went 3-for-6 with a home run, two doubles and five RBIs as the USA Baseball National Team jumped out early and never looked back Sunday in an 11-3 victory over Italy at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Team USA (8-4) has won each of the first three games of the five-game series and improved to 12-0 all-time against Italy.
Arencibia, who raised his team-best batting average to .452, began the scoring with an RBI double in the first inning, starting a four-run first-frame for the National Team. In the fourth, he blasted a three-run homer and Georgia Tech's Matt Wieters followed with a solo homer on the next pitch as Team USA pushed its lead to 8-0.
It was again Arencibia who started the scoring for Team USA in a two-run seventh, doubling in a run. The rising sophomore who earned Freshman All-America and SEC Freshman of the Year honors for the Vols in 2005 now has four doubles and two homers for Team USA this summer.
The USA-Italy Friendship Series continues Tuesday at KeySpan Park in Brooklyn, N.Y. Following the conclusion of the series with Italy, the American squad wraps up its summer tour with a six-game series against Nicaragua in Durham, N.C. (July 29-31), and Myrtle Beach, S.C. (Aug. 2-4).
