BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Four Tennessee Volunteers garnered first team Preseason All-Southeastern Conference honors as the league coaches announced today.
The four were tailback Gerald Riggs Jr., offensive lineman Arron Sears, defensive tackle Jesse Mahelona and defensive back Jason Allen who were among the 10 Vols named to the three teams.
A pair of offensive linemen made the second and third teams respectively in Cody Douglas and Rob Smith.
Defensive end Parys Haralson and linebackers Kevin Simon and Omar Gaither were placed on the second team defense.
Placekicker James Wilhoit made second team special teams.
The Florida Gators led all teams with 12 players. Defending SEC champion Auburn had 11 players selected followed by Tennessee. Alabama and Georgia had nine each.
LSU had eight players selected to the three squads followed by Mississippi State with seven and Ole Miss had six. South Carolina had four players selected while Arkansas and Kentucky had three players each and Vanderbilt had two.
Auburn led all schools with six first-team selections followed by Tennessee with four while Alabama, Florida, Georgia and LSU had three each. Vanderbilt had two players selected to the first-team while Ole Miss, Mississippi State and South Carolina each had one first-team selection.
Ten of the 12 SEC teams had first-team selections and every conference school has representatives on the All-SEC squad.
Auburn senior offensive tackle Marcus McNeill was the only unanimous choice for first-team pre-season All-SEC by the league s coaches. Since coaches cannot vote for their own players, the Decatur, Ga. native, was listed on 11 of the 12 ballots.
This is the second year of the SEC Coaches Pre-Season All-SEC Football Team. It is released in advance of the 2005 SEC Football Media Days, which will be held July 27-29, at the Wynfrey Hotel in Hoover, Ala.
