A two-game series against Pacific 10 rising star California and the first meeting with Air Force in nearly 35 years highlight Tennessee's 2006 and 2007 football schedules.
The Vols play seven games inside Neyland Stadium each of the next two years, including four straight to begin 2006 and a pair of three-game homestands the following season.
"In particular, we're excited about our series against a challenging California program and the newly scheduled contest against Air Force," athletic director Mike Hamilton said. "A number of our players hail from California. It's a great scene for our fans to visit, and it fits our strategy of scheduling quality intersectional opponents who bring national attention to our program. The game against an always well coached Air Force team will be the first in a number of years versus a service academy and one that our fans can get excited about as well."
California visits Sept. 2 to kick off 2006, followed by dates against Air Force, Florida and Marshall. Tennessee and Air Force last met in the 1971 Sugar Bowl where the Vols won 34-13. Tennessee's 1986 meeting with Army marked the last time the Volunteers played a service academy.
The home conference slate includes visits from Florida, Alabama and LSU, while UT returns to Memphis for the first time since 2000. Arkansas rotates on the schedule for a Nov. 11 showdown in Fayetteville. The Vols meet Vanderbilt for the 100th time Nov. 18 in Nashville.
In 2007, Tennessee opens on the West Coast for the fourth time in history and the first since 1994 by visiting California Sept. 1. The Vols played at UCLA in 1967 and 1994 and competed in the 1990 Pigskin Classic against Colorado in Anaheim. The non-conference slate for 2007 certainly has its challenges after the California opener as the Vols face Southern Miss, Northern Illinois and Central Florida at home in September.
The SEC slate for 2007 includes away games at Florida, Mississippi State, Alabama and Kentucky. Conference home games include Georgia, South Carolina, Arkansas and Vanderbilt.
