Coach Summitt's record breaking 880th win is one of four events nominated by the ESPY awards as the Best Record Breaking Performance of 2004-05. Coach Summitt finished the season with 882 career wins, breaking Dean Smith's record of 879 career Division I victories. Summitt broke the record on March 22nd as the Lady Vols beat Purdue in the 2nd round of the NCAA Tournament.
Summitt is up against the New England Patriots who won 21 straight games, dating back to the 2003 season, breaking the previous NFL record of 18 straight set by five teams. Former Vol Peyton Manning is also up for the award as his 49 touchdown passes broke Dan Marino's single-season record of 48, set in 1984. The final nominee is Ichiro Suzuki whose 262 hits in 2004 broke the single-season record of 258 held since 1920 by George Sisler.
