Head coach Phillip Fulmer announced Friday that quarterback Brent Schaeffer is leaving the University of Tennessee at the end of spring semester. Schaeffer appeared in eight games as a freshman for the 2004 Vols, starting three.
"After many discussions with Brent regarding several issues, we've reached a mutual agreement that it is in everyone's best interest for him to leave the University of Tennessee," Fulmer said.
A Deerfield Beach, Fla., native, Schaeffer completed 18-of-37 passes last year for 302 yards and two touchdowns against one interception. He rushed for 66 yards on 33 attempts, scoring his only TD in the season opener against UNLV. His start in that game was the first by a true freshman quarterback in the Southeastern Conference since 1945.
