KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Head Coach Lisa Glenn's Tennessee Lady Volunteer rowing team continued its strong spring season on Saturday, March 27, sweeping Louisville, as the 10th-ranked Tennessee Varsity 8+, the Second Varsity 8+, the Varsity 4+ and the Novice 8+, all claimed victory.
"We made some good adjustments to the race plan from last weekend's competition with Minnesota," Glenn said. "This weekend we saw an improvement on some things we wanted to work on at all levels. Louisville gave us some good competition and tt was some really good racing, especially in the Eights."
The morning's events began with the Varsity 8+ race. Tennessee's crew of Ashley Butturini (cox.), Kaitlin Bargreen, Lauren Wells, Rachel Mayberry, Chelsea Pemberton, Dana Forbes, Sarah Hutcheson, Andrea Bagwell and Beth Schwartz, finished first with a time of 6:29.08. Louisville clocked in with a second-place effort of 6:33.21.
Next, the Varsity 4+ took to the water. The Lady Vol boat of Molly Oellerich (cox.), Brittany Hunley, Kristen Galloway, Jennifer Gerlach and Genevieve Collins, opened up a big early lead and fought off competition from Tennessee's B boat, comprised of Stephanie Davis (cox.), Adrienne Long, Renee Brittle, Katie Payne and Tess Good. Tennessee A claimed the victory, with a time of 7:29.66, ahead of UT B at 7:32.12. The Louisville entrant finished third with a time of 7:40.91.
In the Second Varsity 8+ race, UT jumped out to a quick lead over the Cardinals off the line, as the shell of Jovanna Vick (cox.), Christina Dobratz, Krista Gearing, Melissa DiCerbo, McKenzie Craig, Marissa Allen, Olivia Marnell, Stephanie Williams and Heather Hill, finished first in 6:40.59, well ahead of Louisville at 6:58.26.
In the morning's final event, the Novice 8+, the Lady Volunteers sandwiched a Louisville shell, finishing first in 7:06.12 and third in 7:37.82.
Next up for the Lady Vols is the San Diego Crew Classic in San Diego, Calif. over April 2-3. UT returns to the waters of East Tennessee April 16-17, when it competes in the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta in Oak Ridge.
