Tennessee pitcher Luke Hochevar has been named the SEC Baseball Pitcher of the Week for the second time in the past month after throwing a complete-game one-hitter as the Volunteers defeated Auburn 2-1 last Friday. The junior co-captain also earned recognition as one of Louisville Slugger's National Players of the Week.
A native of Fowler, Colo., Hochevar boasts a 1.47 ERA and a 5-1 record this season. His 54 strikeouts rank first among SEC pitchers.
Last Friday's dominating performance at Auburn marked Hochevar's second complete game of the year. He retired 18 straight batters at one point and finished with 11 strikeouts to only four walks. He took a no-hitter into the ninth inning and ended up throwing the first one-hitter by a Tennessee player since 1996.
He was previously named SEC Baseball Pitcher of the Week Feb. 28 after tossing a four-hit, complete-game shutout at UNC Wilmington in the Hughes Brothers Baseball Challenge. No other Tennessee player has ever won the league's pitcher of the week award twice in the same season.
Hochevar also became the second Vol in as many weeks to be named one of Louisville Slugger's National Players of the Week. Fellow team co-captain Eli Iorg was tabbed for the honor last week after belting four home runs in four games for the Vols.
