The Tennessee baseball team departed Thursday for head coach Rod Delmonico's hometown of Wilmington, N.C., where the Volunteers will take part in the 2005 Hughes Brothers Baseball Challenge. Tennessee faces three Colonial Athletic Association opponents in the three-day event at UNC Wilmington's Brooks Field.
Under Delmonico, Tennessee owns a 9-2 record against current members of the CAA.
The Vols (4-3) begin the weekend with a game against James Madison Friday at 7 p.m. JMU opened its season Wednesday with an 8-4 loss at George Washington. Last year, the Dukes posted a 28-26 record. Sophomore right-hander Sean Watson (1-1, 3.00 ERA) will get the start for Tennessee, while lefty Jacob Cook takes the mound for JMU in his first appearance of the year.
On Saturday at 3 p.m., Tennessee squares off against UNC Wilmington, the team that knocked the Vols out of last season's NCAA tournament. The Seahawks are off to a 5-5 start this year and are expected to start right-hander Ronald Hill (1-1, 1.59 ERA). Tennessee co-captain and preseason All-America selection Luke Hochevar (1-1, 0.75 ERA) will get the nod for the Vols.
Tennessee finishes its weekend on the Atlantic coast with a 1:30 p.m. contest against George Mason Sunday. True freshman left-hander James Adkins (1-1, 2.40 ERA) is scheduled to make his third career start for UT. George Mason will send out lefty Brent Hitz (0-1, 2.25 ERA). GMU enters the tournament with a 1-2 mark this season.
Penn State and UNC Greensboro round out the event's six-team field.
All three of this weekend's games will be broadcast on WUTK 90.3 FM, with play-by-play man Kyle Hixson calling the action. The WUTK radio broadcasts are also available through online audio streaming at www.utkradio.com.
