Tennessee baseball player Luke Hochevar was named to the 2005 Roger Clemens Award Watch List, which was announced last week by the Greater Houston Baseball Association and the Roger Clemens Foundation. The award is presented annually to the top collegiate pitcher in America.
Hochevar (0-1, 1.80 ERA) is among 42 pitchers on the initial watch list, including six from the Southeastern Conference.
Named after future Hall of Famer and current Houston Astros pitcher Roger Clemens, the award will be presented July 14 at a gala dinner in Houston. A selected panel of national media, all Division I head coaches and all past winners of the Rotary Smith Award (which was retired after 2003 by the committee that now sponsors the Clemens Award) vote for the winner.
The watch list includes all Division I pitchers who were named preseason All-Americas by either Baseball America or Collegiate Baseball and those pitchers who have already been honored as National Pitchers of the Week by the National College Baseball Writers Association. Additional nominees may be added based on performance and NCAA statistical rankings.
