After batting a team-best .417 against three ranked teams last weekend in Houston, Texas, Tennessee center fielder Josh Alley became the lone Vol selected to the 2005 Minute Maid College Classic All-Tournament Team. The Vols opened their season at the three-day event held at the Houston Astros' Minute Maid Park and posted a 1-2 record.
Offensively, Alley was 5-for-12 including a triple and one RBI. He also scored one run and stole a base. Defensively, he made what may have been the most outstanding catch of the weekend. In Saturday's game versus No. 10-ranked Baylor, Alley stunned the announced crowd of 21,995 when he sprinted back to chase a fly ball in deep center and made a spectacular diving catch at the warning track.
Tennessee fell to Texas A&M and Baylor on Friday and Saturday, respectively, before defeating Oklahoma State Sunday morning. Rice and Houston rounded out the tournament's six-team field.
A record 44,714 fans attended the 2005 Minute Maid College Classic and Astros FanFest at Minute Maid Park. The three-day crowd total eclipsed the previous record of 44,425, set when the tournament was a four-day event in 2002.
