LADY VOLS HOST LONG TIME RIVAL LA TECH THURSDAY
THE GAME The #1-ranked Tennessee Lady Vols (8-0) are finally home in the friendly confines of Thompson-Boling Arena for a pair of games this week. Tonight, the Lady Vols entertain longtime nemesis Louisiana Tech (5-2) in a 7 p.m. tip-off on CSS. LADY VOLS AT A GLANCE This is the Lady Vols' 32nd season under Head Coach Pat Summitt...She has compiled a staggering 890-172 overall record...Passed Dean Smith for most NCAA collegiate basketball wins of all-time with a 75-54 victory over Purdue on Mar. 22, 2005 ... Summitt Is just 10 wins away from collecting 900 career victories...Her 2004-05 squad finished third in the NCAA Final Four Championships with a 30-5 overall record and were the SEC Tournament Champions... This season, UT returned eight letterwinners, two redshirt freshmen and welcomed one newcomer ...The 2005-06 season marks the Lady Vol debut for redshirt freshmen Candace Parker and Alex Fuller who sat out last season rehabbing their left knees...True freshman, #21 Lindsey Moss, a 6-0 guard from Alpharetta, Ga., is seeing her first action in the Orange and White this season as well... THE 4-1-1 ON THE LADY TECHSTERS Louisiana Tech is 5-2 on the season and is under the direction of first-time head coach, Chris Long, a former Techster assistant. In their last outing, Aarica Ray-Boyd scored a career-high tying 16 points and Tasha Williams added nine points and a career-high 16 rebounds as Louisiana Tech overcame one of the poorest shooting nights in the program's history to down Mississippi State, 52-41, in Ruston on Tues., Dec. 13. The 52 points was the second lowest point total in a Tech win in the program's history. For the game, Tech hit only 26 percent (17-66) of its field goal attempts including a paltry 6-of-37 in the final 20 minutes of play. A Ray-Boyd jumper with 10:18 to play in the game gave the Lady Techsters a 40-31 lead; however, Tech would hit only 1-of-18 shots the rest of the game. Mississippi State (2-6) capitalized on Tech's cold shooting, cutting a 36-22 Techster lead down to 40-36 with seven minutes to play. The Lady Techsters held on by hitting on 9-of-10 free throws in the final two minutes of play to secure the victory, its fourth straight at home against Mississippi State. The substory of the night was the rebounding of Williams, who entered the game with a career-high of eight boards in her career. The senior guard, who hit only 2-of-10 field goals in the game, pulled down seven boards in the first half - all defensive - and nine more in the second half - eight on the offensive end of the floor. OUR SCHEDULE THIS WEEK... Actually kind of light due to final exams. This week, the #1-ranked Tennessee Lady Vols entertain Louisiana Tech on Dec. 15 on CSS. Next Tuesday, Dec. 20, first-time opponent Princeton visits for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off in Thompson-Boling Arena. LADY VOLS ON TV A record 20 Lady Vol regular season games are slated for television this season. Tennessee's game at Mississippi State on Jan. 15 will now be televised on CSS. The Tennessee at Georgia game on Feb. 16 will now tip-off at 8 p.m. on ESPN2. There will be no TV for Old Dominion. ON THIS DAY Tennessee is 5-4 in their history when playing on Dec. 15. The Lady Vols are 1-1 at home, 3- 2 on the road, and 1-1 on neutral courts. Last time out on the 15th, the Lady Vols defeated Louisiana Tech, 70-59 (2004) in Ruston. LOOKING BACK Last year at this time, the Lady Vols were 6-2 and had just defeated Louisiana Tech, 70-59, on the road. UT'S OFFENSIVE FIREPOWER In all games, this is how Tennessee has shot from the field: 50%FG: Texas (.549); 40%FG: Chattanooga (.477), GWU (.462), Mich. St. (.460), Stetson (.446), Maryland (.415), Stanford (.413), Gonzaga (.406), 30%FG: none, DEEE ----- FENSE In all games, this is how the opposition has shot from the field: 50%FG: none, 40%FG: Stanford (.481), Texas (.448), Maryland (.434), Gonzaga (.426), 30%FG: GWU (.348), Mich. St. (.333), Chattanooga (.322), 20%FG: Stetson (.283) 2005-06 WON-LOSS DIFFERENTIAL Wins: +50 (1), +42 (1), +41 (1), +28 (1), +16 (1), +14 (1), +7 (1), +5 (1) THE COUNTDOWN HAS BEGUN Lady Vol coach Pat Summitt is now just 10 wins away from the incredible uncharted plateau of 900 career victories. Summitt started the season with 882 wins and now has 890. Tennessee's next 10 opponents includes: Louisiana Tech, Princeton, at Temple, at Notre Dame, Old Dominion, at South Carolina, Connecticut, Georgia, at Mississippi State and at Vanderbilt. FULL STRENGTH Lady Vol redshirt freshman forward Alex Fuller has returned to the practice floor on a full-time basis. Fuller suffered a strained hip flexor in the second game of the season against UT-Chattanooga and has been on the mend ever since seeing only spot action in three of the last six games. Fuller played 21 minutes against both Stetson and Chattanooga and quickly indicated her prowess for rebounding as she grabbed five offensive boards against Stetson and had four caroms against Chattanooga. Since the UTC game and her injury, she played just six minutes against #9 Michigan State, four minutes against #10 Maryland and eight minutes against #12/11 Stanford. NOTRE DAME-TENNESSEE GAME AT JOYCE CENTER IS SOLD OUT The University of Notre Dame Athletics Ticket Office announced on Dec. 13 that the Dec. 31 women's basketball game between the Irish and Tennessee at the Joyce Center is sold out. The official announcement of the 11,418-seat sellout, the third in program history, comes 19 days prior to tip-off and makes the 2 p.m. (ET) New Year's Eve contest the fastest sellout in the 29-year history of Notre Dame women's basketball. The Irish had two capacity crowds in their first national championship season of 2000-01 - vs. top-ranked Connecticut on Jan. 15, and vs. Georgetown for Senior Night on Feb. 24 - with the latter contest exhausting its ticket allotment 15 days in advance. GAME REPORT 9 - LOUISIANA TECH A member of the Western Athletic Conference, Louisiana Tech is in the midst of their pseudo-Southeastern Conference schedule. The Lady Techsters defeated Mississippi State in Ruston on Dec. 13, 52-41, play Tennessee tonight and will entertain Ole Miss in Ruston on Dec. 20. Tech features three players in doublefigures led by 5-7 senior guard Tasha Williams with 13.6 ppg. UT-LOUISIANA TECH All-Time Series Meetings
THE SERIES WITH TECH This marks the 38th meeting between the two schools dating back to the 1977-78 season. Since 1987, when the Lady Vols were a horrific 1-11 against the Techsters, UT began closing the gap and have won 19 of the last 25 meetings. TOTALLY RANKED Since the series began in 1978, both UT and Tech have been ranked in all but three of the 37 previous meetings between the two schools. The Lady Vols are 16-4 in games when they are ranked higher than Tech and 4- 13 in games when they are ranked lower than the Lady Techsters. UT and LTU are great examples of programs that have sustained a winning tradition for nearly four decades. VERSUS THE WAC Tennessee has fashioned a 21-17 record alltime against two schools in the Western Athletic Conference. UT is 1-0 vs. San Jose St. and 20-17 against La Tech. LTU formerly played in the Sun Belt. CAREER STATS VS. TECH Returning Lady Vol career statistics versus Tech can be found on p. 67 in the 2005-06 Tennessee media guide. Senior guard Shanna Zolman leads the Lady Vols against LaTech with 13.7 ppg in three meetings. Best UT rebounder against the Lady Techsters is junior Sidney Spencer with 5.5 rpg. LADY VOLS VS. LADY TECHSTERS STAT COMPARISON
OUR LAST MEETING VERSUS LOUISIANA TECH In a contest that featured two of the most successful programs in the history of women's collegiate basketball, the No. 9/10 Tennessee Lady Vols defeated Louisiana Tech, 70-59, at the Thomas Assembly Center in Ruston, La., on Dec. 15, 2004. The victory was UT's fifth straight win over the Lady Techsters and improved its all-time record to 20-17 against the longtime rival. The Big Orange jumped out to an early 5-0 lead after connecting on its first two shots from the floor. Tech would respond with an 8-0 run, though, to take a narrow 8-5 advantage. While neither team was able to build more than a four point lead during the next 10 minutes, the Lady Vols closed the opening session with an 11-1 run to take a 35-28 advantage into the locker room. The lead marked just the second time in the last five games that UT has led at the break. As it did to open the game, Tennessee struck first in the second half and scored the first five points, opening up a 12-point lead, 40-28. During the next 11 minutes, Tech would cut the margin to single digits on seven occasions but could get no closer than seven points. However, with the Orange and White up by 11 and a little more than eight minutes showing on the clock, the Lady Techsters rattled off a 6-0 run to cut the lead to just five with 6:33 to play. With a crowd of 6,612 cheering on the home team, freshman Alexis Hornbuckle answered Tech's challenge when she connected on a short jumper and was fouled, hitting the free throw and extending the margin back to eight points. Tech would get no closer the rest of the way as Tennessee held on for the 11-point triumph. Individually, the Lady Vols were paced by Hornbuckle, who totaled a career-high 17 points and five steals, and Shanna Zolman, who tallied 15 points and five boards. Additionally, three players just missed out on double-figure point totals, as Shyra Ely, Brittany Jackson and Sidney Spencer all scored nine points apiece. PROGRAM WINS Both Tennessee and Louisiana Tech boast over 700 all-time wins at their Universities. They are the only women's programs to boast this statistic. FOND MEMORY VS. TECH The Lady Vols claimed their first NCAA title in 1987 with a 67-44 drubbing of the Lady Techsters at the Final Four in Austin, Texas. UT ROOKIE DOUBLE-DOUBLES When redshirt rookie Candace Parker picked up a double-double in her first collegiate start it was the first time it happened in ten years - well, since another heralded Lady Vol freshman, Chamique Holdsclaw. All-time, there are just six Lady Vols who recorded a double-double in their first game in the Orange and White:
However, Parker could just as easily have eight consecutive double-doubles to start her UT career. Stetson--19 points, 10 rebounds OUR LAST MEETING IN KNOXVILLE Playing before 11,804 orange-clad faithful and former Lady Vol great Tamika Catchings, who was on hand to have her #24 jersey retired, the third-ranked Tennessee women's basketball team defeated #10/11 Louisiana Tech, 85-65, on Sunday, Dec. 7, 2003, at Thompson-Boling Arena. With the win, UT has now defeated the Lady Techsters four consecutive times, including seven of the last eight meetings. The Lady Vols were led by junior Shyra Ely, who posted her seventh-career double-double with a 17-point, 11-rebound effort. Ely paced the Orange and White in scoring in each of the first three contests, while notching team-high rebounding marks twice. Tennessee was also aided by the offensive production of sophomore Shanna Zolman, junior Brittany Jackson and junior Loree Moore, who tallied 15, 14 and 10 points, respectively. Zolman, who connected on three of four three-pointers, and Jackson each recorded then-season highs with their performances. Using solid defense and accurate shooting, UT jumped out to a quick 10-point lead, 12-2, less than three minutes into the game following a 20- footer from Zolman. Louisiana Tech, however, would battle back to take a 26-20 lead at the 8:17 mark before Tennessee exploded for a 25-12 run to close the half. After cutting the margin to just six a little more than two minutes into the second half, the Lady Vols gradually extended their lead throughout the remainder of the game. The Big Orange pushed the advantage to as many as 22 points before closing out the contest with its third-straight lopsided victory of the season. On the night, Tennessee shot 46 percent (32-70) from the field, while Tech managed to hit on just 34 percent (23-67) of its shots. UT also dominated the glass, snaring 11 more rebounds than the opposition (50-39). The Lady Vols also had a great night behind the arc, connecting on seven of 14 attempts for 50 percent. DID YOU KNOW? The Lady Vols have narrowly outscored the Lady Techsters 69.9 to 68.9 in their 37- game series......Despite the historical parity evidenced by a slim 20-17 series lead, Tennessee obliterated the Lady Techsters with stifling defense, 60-35, in Ruston, La., on Dec. 4, 2002...The 35 points scored by La Tech's was their lowest total ever and the 25-point margin of defeat was its worst setback in Thomas Assembly Center... BEEN ON OUR DANCE CARD Tennessee and Louisiana Tech are not NCAA postseason strangers. The Lady Vols and the Lady Techsters have been attending the Final Four on a pretty regular basis since 1982. In fact, there have been just four Final Fours all-time not attended by UT or La Tech - 1985, 1992, 1993 and 2001. Tennessee and Tech have attended six Big Dances together - 1982, 1984, 1987, 1988, 1989 and 1998. In fact, the Lady Vols celebrated their first NCAA Championship in 1987 with a 67- 44 victory over the Lady Techsters and its most recent NCAA title in 1998 with a 93-75 win over the Techsters. WE ENJOYED THE 90s AND NOW THE 00s It's hard to believe that the Tennessee versus Louisiana Tech series has spanned into four decades -- the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and 2000s. If you ask the Lady Vols which decade they've enjoyed the most it would be the 90's where Tennessee finally found a little winning dominance over the Techsters with a 10-4 record after suffering through the 80's (4-11) and the 70's (1-2). UT's 21st century record stands at 5-0 as the Lady Vols now lead the series, 20-17. GET STREAKY WITH ME During the 1999-2000 season, Louisiana Tech broke UT's 40-game home court winning streak that started right after UConn broke the Lady Vols' NCAA leading 69-game winning streak on Jan. 6, 1996. In the Nov. 30, 1998 meeting in Ruston, Tech had won 52-consecutive games dating back to 1995 when UT was the second-to-the-last team to beat the Lady Techsters in the Thomas Assembly Center. The Lady Vols preserved their 69-game streak by snapping Tech's 52- game streak with a 92-73 win. TECH HAD TO GET BY UT FOR ITS TWO NCAA TITLES Louisiana Tech has been crowned NCAA Champions twice since 1982. On both occasions, the Lady Techsters had to get by Tennessee for their two titles. In 1982, Tech beat the Lady Vols, 69-46, in the semifinals in Norfolk, Va. In 1988, the defending NCAA Champion Lady Vols were defeated by Tech, 68-59, in the semifinals in Tacoma, Wash. In 1994, Tech knocked the Lady Vols off in the semifinals of the Mideast Regionals, 71-68. The Lady Techsters would have won the NCAA title that year but a buzzer-beater trey by North Carolina's Charlotte Smith upset them, 60-59. BACK TO THE TOP SPOT - IN BOTH POLLS The Tennessee Lady Vols remained in the No.1 spot in the Associated Press poll on Dec. 13 for the 98th time in Head Coach Pat Summitt's career. The Lady Vols are off to a perfect 8-0 start. In the Dec. 5 AP poll, the Lady Vols were voted #1. It marked the first time since the second poll of the 2004-05 season that Tennessee has held the top spot in women's college hoops. The AP poll, now in its 30th year, celebrated poll number 500 in the first week of this season. Tennessee is on a run of 363 consecutive appearances in the poll. The 13th week of the 1984-85 season marked the last time a Summitt squad was not ranked. The Lady Vols have been unranked only 14 times in 504 polls. Summitt has guided the program to a poll-best 364 top-five appearances. Louisiana Tech, with 279 weeks in the top-five, ranks second. In the Nov. 28 poll, Duke led by seven points even though Tennessee had a 22-21 edge in first-place votes. T THE ESPN/USA TODAY POLLING PLACE In the first USA TODAY/ESPN poll of the year on Nov. 1, the Tennessee Lady Vols began the 2005-06 season as the number one ranked team in the country. It marks the 25th time in 30 years that UT has started the season in the top five in the nation. GRUELING STRETCH Traditionally, Tennessee teams take most of its losses in the month of December when Coach Pat Summitt loads up on some tough non-conference opposition to prepare the team for the rigors of the postseason. Last year, the Lady Vol team carried three losses into January following its early season defeats to Texas, Duke and Rutgers. Records over the years including games played through the month of December:
DECEMBER SUCCESS The Lady Vols have enjoyed a great deal of success in the month of December over the years. UT has produced a 162-42 all-time record during the 12th month of the year. The Lady Vols are 52-10 at home, 63-23 away and 47-9 at neutral sites. ELITE COMPANY When Pat Summitt started freshman forward Candace Parker against Stetson on Nov. 20, 2005, it marked only the 10th time in her coaching career that a freshman started her very first game at Tennessee. The list of opening day rookie starters: Shyra Ely 2001, Ashley Robinson 2000, Gwen Jackson 1999, Semeka Randall 1997, Kyra Elzy 1996, Chamique Holdsclaw 1995, Tiffani Johnson 1994, Bridgette Gordon and Sheila Frost 1985. LADY VOL STREAKS The last time the Lady Vols lost at home was against Duke, 59-57 on Dec. 2, 2004 -- since then, UT has won 15 home games. The last time UT lost on the road was on Feb. 10, 2005 at #1 LSU, since then, UT has won four road games. The last time the Lady Vols lost on a neutral court was against Michigan State, 64-68, in the NCAA semifinal game on April 3, 2005 Since then, UT has won three games on a neutral court. LAST LOSS TO AN UNRANKED TEAM? When is the last time Tennessee lost to an unranked team? That would have been to LSU on Mar. 2, 2002 at the SEC Tournament in Nashville, Tenn. LSU had been in and out of the Top 25 polls in late January and February. Prior to that, UT's last loss to an unranked team was five years previous (to the day) losing to Auburn on Mar. 2, 1997 at the SEC Tournament in Chattanooga, Tenn. 491 GAMES VERSUS RANKED TEAMS Tennessee's game versus #12/11 Stanford on Dec. 4, 2005 was the Lady Vols' 491st all-time versus a ranked team since the inception of the polls in 1976. UT is an amazing 349-142 (.703) versus ranked teams. This year, Tennessee is 4-0 versus ranked teams. In 2004-05, the Lady Vols were 10-5 vs. ranked teams. 100 POINT GAMES Since 1974, the Lady Vols have gone over the century mark 70 times. Noteworthy: Tennessee went over 100 points in an NCAA playoff game for the first time ever in 1993-94 with the win over North Carolina A&T, 111-37. The 1987-88 team hit triple digits in seven games leading the NCAA. IN OVERTIME The Lady Vols are 24-12 all-time in overtime games. The most OT games in a year was tied in 2003-04 with four as the Lady Vols went 3-1 in overtime losing to Georgia, 68- 66, and defeating Auburn, 68-61, DePaul, 96-89, and Stanford, 70-66. It tied the mark set in 1996-97, when the Lady Vols were 3-1 in overtime contests losing to Georgia, 94- 93, and defeating Texas, 68-65, Vanderbilt, 92-79 and LSU, 100-99. UT's 22 points in the OT against Florida (2-3-05), was the most ever scored by the Lady Vols in a single overtime. AN OT STORY Before the Lady Vols piled up four overtime games in the 2003-04 season, OT contests were few and far-in-between. The Jan. 4, 2003, overtime contest with Connecticut, was the first time Tennessee was involved in an extra stanza game since the 1996-97 season when the Lady Vols played a thenrecord four overtime affairs. NEXT-UP ON UT'S RADAR SCREEN - PRINCETON At 5-3, Princeton has won more games through its first eight than in any season since 1995-96, when the team started 7-1... After Sunday's thrilling game against No. 6/7-ranked Rutgers, Princeton goes from one RU to another when they faced Rider on Dec. 14, just down Route 206 in Lawrenceville, N.J. ...Princeton came the second-closest of any school through the Scarlet Knights' first eight games to upsetting the 2005 NCAA Regional finalists...The nine-point win was Rutgers' closest shave after a six-point win over Iowa...The Tigers were also only the second team this year to lead Rutgers at halftime and have more steals than the Scarlet Knights...PU senior center Becky Brown was named the Ivy League Player of the Week for her 32-point, 20-rebound performances against Army and Rutgers... Brown leads the conference in shooting percentage at .630 and is the league's top rebounder with 9.1 per game... Against Rutgers, Brown's 14-point, 13- rebound game was her fourth double-double of the year and 11th of her career... Brown is in seventh place by a point on the all-time career scoring list at Princeton...Just a freshman, Jessica Berry has quickly become an important cog in the Princeton offense... She averages 10.9 points per game, ranks second in the league in assists at five per game, and carries an assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.29 helpers for each giveaway... That's good for sixth in the league...Healthy through its first five games, Princeton had its first major injury of the season on Dec. 3 when junior Elyse Umeda went down with a torn ACL. She will miss the rest of the season... In his fifth season, Princeton head coach Richard Barron stands fourth on the school's wins list with 45 victories. UT LEADS IN NCAA ATTENDANCE Once again, the Tennessee Lady Vols top the nation's attendance leaders:
Top Single Game Attendances (Over 8,000)
THOMPSON-BOLING ARENA ONLY ONE LOSS EVER The unranked Temple Owls almost pulled off a shocker in Knoxville, Tenn., on Nov. 28, 2004, losing 52-48 to the #1-ranked Tennessee Lady Vols. Tennessee has never lost to an unranked team at home in the 18-years that the team has been playing in Thompson-Boling Arena. In fact, since the Associated Press polls started in 1976, the Lady Vols have only lost one game ever to an unranked opponent at home. The Dawn Staley-coached Temple Owls almost accomplished (practically 20 years to the day) what the unranked Cincinnati Lady Bearcats pulled-off when they waltzed into Stokely Athletics Center on Nov. 26, 1984, and hung a 72-69 loss on the 12th-ranked Lady Vols. Cincinnati's Cheryl Cook had a field day against UT and tossed in 34 points in 33 minutes of action in the upset. Tennessee has lost just 14 games all-time at TBA - all to ranked opponents and comprised of just seven teams. UT has never played a game at TBA when they were not ranked. UT lost 19 games all-time at Stokely since the rankings started in 1976. Eighteen losses were to ranked opponents and just one to an unranked team. UT was not ranked at the time of three of the losses to ranked teams. WELCOME TO OUR NEW FLOOR - "THE SUMMITT" The playing court in the Thompson-Boling Arena on the University of Tennessee campus has a new look for the 2005-06 season. After Lady Vol coach Pat Summitt passed Dean Smith for most NCAA collegiate basketball wins of all-time with a 75- 54 win over Purdue on Mar. 22, 2005, UT named the TBA court, "The Summitt." The floor had a complete overhaul this past summer. Permanent logos of both the Lady Vols and Vols were painted directly in front of the scorer's table; the free throw lanes were painted orange with "SEC" reversed out; the giant jump circle/mid-court TENNESSEE was given a new brighter color scheme, and "The Summitt," Coach Summitt's actual signature adorns the sidelines opposite the team benches. 200 WINS IN THE BAG Tennessee recorded its 200th win in Thompson-Boling Arena when the Lady Vols defeated the University of Southern California on Nov. 18, 2001, 106-66. UT has now amassed a 256-14 (.946) record since the Orange and White moved into the Thompson-Boling Arena to start the 1987-88 season 18-years ago. Along the way, the Lady Vols have produced eight flawless home records in 1988-89 (15-0), 1991- 92 (14-0), 1992-93 (13-0), 1993-94 (15-0), 1994-95 (15-0), 1997-98 (16-0), 1998- 99 (14-0), 2000-01 (15-0) and 2002-03 (16-0). UT also registered an NCAA record 69-game home court-winning streak from Feb. 1, 1991 thru Jan. 2, 1996. JUST 14 LOSSES The Tennessee Lady Vols rarely lose at home. In fact, since moving to the Thompson-Boling Arena for the 1987-88 campaign, UT has lost two games in one season just five times. UT lost two games in TBA during the inaugural 1987-88 campaign, 1996-97, 1999-00, 2001-02 and the 2003-04 seasons. The 14 all-time losses at Thompson-Boling Arena have come at the hands of just seven teams: Duke (2004), Connecticut (2004, 2002, 2000, 1996), Louisiana Tech (1999, 1989), Georgia (1996, 1991), Texas (2003, 2002, 1987), Stanford (1996) and Auburn (1988). HOME SWEET HOME -- 400th HOME WIN The victory over Georgia on Jan. 31, 2005, was the Lady Vols 400th home win since Pat Summitt took over as head coach in 1974. Summitt has won 91.4 percent of all home games in 32 years producing a 409-38 overall record. Home losses (in the Summitt era) include: six in Alumni Gym from 1974-76; 18 in Stokely Athletics Center from 1976-87; and 14 in Thompson-Boling Arena since 1987. 206 OF 217 AT HOME UT has won 206 of their last 217 games in Thompson-Boling Arena dating back to 2-1-91. UT's 11 losses during this time have been to Duke, Louisiana Tech, UConn (four times), Stanford, Texas (three times) and Georgia (OT).
