Tennessee head baseball coach Rod Delmonico has been named the 2005 Division I College Baseball Coach of the Year by the Tennessee Baseball Coaches Association (TBCA). This marks the fourth time that Delmonico has earned that distinction in his 16 seasons on Rocky Top.
Delmonico was previously tabbed as the TBCA Coach of the Year in 1993, 1995 and 2001. This past summer, he guided the Vols to the NCAA College World Series for the third time in his tenure and the fourth time in school history.
The TBCA will formally recognize Delmonico at its annual awards luncheon at the Airport Marriott in Nashville Jan. 14.
FORMER VOLS HEADLEY, IORG RATED AMONG TOP-FIVE PROSPECTS IN THEIR RESPECTIVE ORGANIZATIONS
Two former Vols who helped lead Tennessee to the 2005 NCAA College World Series are now rated among the top prospects in their respective professional organizations according to Baseball America.
The publication recently listed third baseman Chase Headley (2004-05) as the fourth-best overall prospect in the San Diego Padres system while ranking outfielder Eli Iorg (2004-05) as the fifth-best overall prospect in the Houston Astros organization.
Iorg was selected by Houston in the supplemental first round of this past summer's MLB draft (38th overall pick), and Headley was taken in the second round by San Diego (66th overall pick).
Baseball America also listed Headley as having the best strike-zone discipline in the Padres system. As a junior with the Vols last season, Headley set a school-record with 63 walks and led the Southeastern Conference with a .530 on-base percentage.
Baseball America's top-10 prospect lists are based on the publication's projections of a player's long-term worth after discussions with scouting and player-development personnel.
