KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Following a couple of outstanding performances at the NCAA Regional Championship, which earned junior middle blocker Sarah Blum, State College Regional Most Outstanding Player accolades, she was honored on Tuesday as both the CVU.com National Player of the Week and the Lady Vol Athlete of the Week.
Blum put the finishing touch on UT's first Regional Championship in school history as, at match point, she hit the ball off a Missouri block attempt and straight to the ground. As the ball landed on the Tigers's side of the court, Blum and the Lady Vols celebrated their first trip to the National Semifinals.
Against the Tigers, she had nine blocks and hit .333 (12-2-30). This followed up Blum's output of 11 putbacks in Tennessee's 3-1 win over No. 2 Penn State on Friday night. She also had eight kills versus the Nittany Lions.
For the week, Blum contributed 20 kills and 20 blocks, averaging 2.50/game in each category. She hit .294 (20-5-51) in the two matches.
The national honor is the first for Blum, while she earned previous Lady Vol Athlete of the Week accolades on Dec. 6, 2004, and Sept. 30, 2003.
Blum and the Lady Vols take on No. 3 Washington in an NCAA National Semifinal at 6 p.m. CST on Thursday in San Antonio, Texas.
