KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee volleyball team (15-7, 9-3 Southeastern Conference) heads to Lexington to take on the Kentucky Wildcats (16-7, 9-4 SEC) in an SEC match at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday. The teams are in the midst of a five-team battle for second place (Arkansas is 10-3, UT 9-3, UK and LSU 9-4 and Alabama 8-5 Florida leads the conference with a 12-1 mark) as the league's schools finish up their respective SEC slates by next Saturday.
In Tennessee's and Kentucky's earlier meeting in Knoxville on Oct. 21, the Lady Vols claimed a 30-23, 36-34, 30-25 win over the Wildcats. The Big Orange now trails the all-time series with Kentucky, 34-22, although Tennessee has won the last three meetings.
Statistical leaders for Kentucky include Danielle Wallace (4.34 kills/game), Amy Kaplan (.367 hitting percentage), Leigh Marcum (12.30 assists/game), Jenni Casper (4.81 digs/game) and Queen Nzenwa (1.37 blocks/game).
At 16-7 overall, the Wildcats have already earned the most wins since 1999, while Kentucky's 9-4 SEC mark ensures the Wildcats their first winning conference record since the 1996 squad went 8-6 in league play. The last time UK won as many as nine SEC contests occurred in 1993 (12-2).
The Lady Vols are coming off a 3-0 week which included a comeback 15-30, 30-18, 30-18, 30-21 win at South Carolina, a 30-25, 30-20, 30-26 sweep of Georgia in front of a school-record crowd of 3,311 and a dramatic 30-22, 32-30, 19-30, 37-39, 15-12 win over No. 4 Florida for the school's first-ever win over a top-five team.
Next week, the Big Orange completes its SEC and home schedules with a trio of matches as Tennessee takes on South Carolina at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Alabama at 7 p.m. on Friday and Auburn at 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 13.
