| Jayson Swain's three-catch, 50-yard performance last week vs. Vanderbilt put him over the 1,000-yard career receiving yardage milestone with 1,010. | DID YOU KNOW? Tuesday, Nov. 22, marks the 71st anniversary of former Vol tailback Beattie Feathers (1931-33) becoming the first player in NFL history to rush for 1,000 yards in a single season. In 1934, Feathers carried the ball 101 times for 1,004 yards (his 8.44 per-carry average during his rookie season still ranks atop the NFL record book). SERIES HISTORY Tennessee heads north on Interstate Highway 75 to Lexington, Ky., where it faces SEC Eastern Division rival Kentucky Nov. 26. The Volunteers lead the all-time series with the Wildcats 68-23-9, dating to 1893. Tennessee has played Kentucky more than any other opponent (100 times), and the Vols own a 20-game win streak in the series. Vols head coach Phillip Fulmer owns a 12-0 record against UK, and his squads have averaged 45.2 ppg vs. the Wildcats (while allowing just 12.3 ppg). Junior offensive guard and team co-captain Rob Smith (Fort Thomas) and sophomore defensive end Jared Hostetter (Louisa) are the only Kentucky natives on UT's roster. MAJORS TO BE INDUCTED INTO PEACH BOWL HALL OF FAME Former UT All-America tailback (1954-56) and head coach (1977-92) Johnny Majors has been selected for induction into the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl Hall of Fame, with enshrinement ceremonies taking place the week of the 2005 Peach Bowl in Atlanta. Majors led the Vols to a pair of Peach Bowl appearances in 1982 and 1988 (the 1982 and 1987 seasons). Tennessee fell to Iowa 28-22 in 1982, but Vols quarterback Alan Cockrell was named the game's Most Valuable Player after UT outscored the Hawkeyes in the second half. Majors guided Tennessee to a 27-22 victory over Indiana in the 1988 Peach Bowl, with tailback Reggie Cobb earning game-MVP honors. Majors joins Reggie White (inducted in 2004) as the only two Vols in the Peach Bowl Hall of Fame. VOLS' WIN STREAK OVER KENTUCKY SECOND-LONGEST IN NCAA DIVISION I-A Tennessee's current 20-game win streak over Kentucky is the second-longest active winning streak over a major opponent in NCAA Division I-A (teams must have played every year). Only Notre Dame's current streak of 42 straight wins over Navy is the only longer active streak. SATURDAY'S GAME TO MARK FINAL COLLEGE GAME FOR 23 VOLUNTEERS 23 players on Tennessee's roster will play their final collegiate game Saturday. Those student-athletes whose Big Orange careers will come to an end Saturday include: Jon Catanzano, Peter Chang, Rick Clausen, Cody Douglas, C.J. Fayton, Jake Finlayson, Ryan Fusco, Omar Gaither, Richie Gandy, Jason Hall, Chris Hannon, Parys Haralson, Jesse Mahelona, Bill Martin, Adam Miles, Jon Poe, Lester Ransom, Justin Reed, Kevin Shipley, Kevin Simon, Albert Toeaina, Robert Williams and Nick Wilson. Quarterbacks coach Randy Sanders will also end his coaching career at UT Saturday, as he announced his resignation Oct. 31. A native of Morristown, Tenn., Sanders was a quarterback for the Vols from 1984-88. He joined the coaching staff in 1989, serving as a graduate assistant, running backs coach and wide receivers coach. He was named offensive coordinator after the 1998 regular season and occupied that post until after this year's South Carolina game. FOSTER PROVING TO BE WORKHORSE IN UT BACKFIELD, RUNS WILD ON VANDERBILT TENNESSEE'S ALL-TIME FRESHMAN RUSHING LEADERS | PLAYER, YEAR | G | ATT | YDS | 1. Jamal Lewis, 1997 | 12 | 232 | 1,364 | 2. Chuck Webb, 1989 | 10 | 209 | 1,236 | 3. Reggie Cobb, 1987 | 12 | 237 | 1,197 | 4. James Stewart, 1991 | 11 | 190 | 939 | 5. Arian Foster, 2005 | 10 | 157 | 765 | Redshirt freshman Arian Foster has become the first Vols freshman to run for at least 100 yards in each of his first four starts since Chuck Webb did so in 1989 (in his first five starts). Foster ran for 148 yards vs. South Carolina Oct. 29, 125 yards at Notre Dame Nov. 5 and 132 yards vs. Memphis Nov. 12. Last Saturday in Knoxville, the native of San Diego, Calif., broke loose for 223 yards on 40 carries (one carry shy of the UT single-game record). On the season, Foster is averaging 4.9 yards on 157 carries. Foster has also been a receiving threat out of the backfield, catching nine passes for 104 yards, including a career-long 26-yard reception vs. the Commodores. Foster was forced into the starter's role in the Vols' backfield after senior Gerald Riggs Jr. suffered a season-ending ankle injury at Alabama Oct. 22. NOVEMBERS TO REMEMBER Tennessee has a 76-7 (.916) mark in the month of November since 1985. Since that season, the Vols are 44-4 (.917) at home and 32-3 (.914) on the road in November. The rare November losses came in: 1990, 2004 and 2005 to Notre Dame; 1996 at Memphis; 1999 at Arkansas; 2002 vs. Miami (Fla.) and 2005 vs. Vanderbilt. Against Southeastern Conference opposition, the Vols boast a 54-2 (.964) record in November (including a 28-1 home mark). UT THIRD NATIONALLY IN RUSH DEFENSE Tennessee ranks first in the Southeastern Conference and third nationally with a rushing defense that allows an average of just 86.1 yards per game. The Vols' opponents are averaging just 2.7 yards per rush this season. In addition, John Chavis' unit has allowed just four rushing plays of 20 yards or longer. SWAIN HITS 1,000-YARD CAREER RECEIVING MILESTONE; LEADS UT IN CATCHES, YARDS Junior wide receiver Jayson Swain's three-catch, 50-yard performance last week vs. Vanderbilt put him over the 1,000-yard career receiving yardage milestone. He is the lone player on UT's current roster to eclipse that mark. Swain has 76 career catches for 1,010 yards and averages 28.1 receiving yards per game for his career. The Huntsville, Ala., native leads the Vols this season with 26 catches (tied with sophomore Robert Meachem) and 357 receiving yards. He has not, however, caught a TD pass this year. TENNESSEE ENJOYS SOLID SPECIAL-TEAMS PERFORMANCE VS. VANDERBILT The Vols enjoyed arguably their best game on special teams this season last Saturday vs. Vanderbilt. True freshman punter Britton Colquitt had his best punting average of the season (46.7 yards), and junior placekicker made his lone field-goal attempt (29 yards). In the return game, sophomore Jonathan Hefney broke loose for a career-long 43-yard punt return and posted a career-high 76 total punt-return yards. In addition, true freshman Lucas Taylor had a career-long kick return of 47 yards while also notching a career-high in total kick-return yards (77). The Commodores averaged just 8.3 yards on kick returns in the game and had one punt return for -4 yards. HALL ENJOYING IMPRESSIVE SENIOR SEASON Senior defensive end Jason Hall leads the Vols in both sacks and TFLs while ranking third in the SEC in both categories this season. Hall has at least one sack in five of the last six games and at least one TFL in eight of the last nine contests. His 48 tackles this season are a career-high, and he boasts 11 career sacks and 19.5 career TFLs. TENNESSEE'S DEFENSE DOMINANT IN THIRD QUARTER Tennessee defensive coordinator John Chavis and his staff have done an excellent job making halftime adjustments this season, as the Vols' eight opponents have scored just 18 third-quarter points (1.8 points per game in the third quarter). The third quarter has proven to be the lowest-scoring quarter in Tennessee's games this year, as the Vols and their opponents have combined to post a grand total of just 46 third quarter points. WILHOIT EIGHTH ON UT CAREER SCORING LIST Junior placekicker James Wilhoit ranks eighth on Tennessee's all-time career scoring charts with 220 points. He is also the SEC's active career scoring leader. The Hendersonville, Tenn., native needs 14 points to tie James Stewart (1991-94) for seventh place on the Vols' all-time list. Wilhoit is 39-for-58 on FG attempts during his career and 103-of-105 on extra-points. VOLS' STARTING DEFENSE HAS GIVEN UP JUST FOUR SECOND-HALF TOUCHDOWNS THIS SEASON Although UT's opponents have scored eight second-half touchdowns this season, only four of those scores have come against the Vols' defensive starters. Georgia and Notre Dame each returned punts for TDs against the Vols in the second half, and the Irish also returned a second-half interception for a score. Mississippi scored an offensive TD in the fourth-quarter against Tennessee, but it came against the Vols' second-string defenders, as UT held a 17-point lead. Until that drive, the Rebels had a negative net rushing total in the game. The only three second-half TDs that have been scored against Tennessee's starting defense this year have been by UAB, Georgia, South Carolina and Vanderbilt. SENIORS ALLEN, RIGGS JR. OUT FOR SEASON Tennessee's defensive charges were dealt a serious blow during the Vols' game against Georgia Oct. 8, as senior co-captain Jason Allen suffered a season-ending hip injury while tackling Bulldogs tight end Leonard Pope in the second quarter. One week later at Alabama, senior tailback Gerald Riggs Jr. suffered a season-ending ankle injury, bringing his career as a Vol to a close. Allen and Riggs Jr. were both preseason All-SEC selections. Allen closes out his career with 220 tackles, more than any other active Vol. Riggs finishes 13th on UT's all-time career rushing yardage list with 1,893 yards.
