Lady Vol Head Coach Lisa Glenn and the Tennessee rowing team will kick off its fall season on Saturday, October 8, at the Chattanooga Head Race in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
The Lady Vols will place 13 shells in three races starting with the Women's Championship 8+ Race at 9 a.m. Members of last year's second place boat at the Chattanooga event Molly Oellerich, Beth Schwartz, Heather Hill, Krista Gearing, Nina Dobratz will join returning gold medallists Lauren Wells and Rachel Mayberry in UT's first varsity 8+ shell. The second entrant for UT in the Championship 8+ event comprises of just three Chattanooga Head Race veterans and six newcomers. Tennessee's third shell in the same event will include three freshmen, four returning sophomores and two new members of the Lady Vol rowing team. The Big Orange will also enter six shells in the Championship 2- race at 1 p.m. and four in the Championship 4+ race at 3:30 p.m.
"We are excited to get into the water and into a race situation," said Glenn. "This is a good opening event for us to start our season. We have some things to improve on before heading into the Head of The Charles in a few weeks. We have a lot of excitement and good energy going into this race. Our expectation is to have solid execution and have everyone fill their role in the boats."
Last year, the Orange and White earned gold medals in the Championship 8+, the Championship 4+ and the Open Pair events. The Championship 8+ and Championship 4+ shells each finished over 40 seconds ahead of the nearest competitors.
The Chattanooga Head Race boasts a course approximately three miles long that ventures through the heart of downtown Chattanooga before ending at Ross' Landing. Competing teams this year include: UTC Rowing, Georgia Tech Crew, Vanderbilt University Crew, Clemson University, Georgia State Crew and the Alabama Crew, as well as some high school and community teams.
After the Chattanooga Head Race, the squad will have two weeks to prepare for the prestigious Head of the Charles Race in Boston, Mass. comprise
