The University of Tennessee women's rowing team will look to continue its successful fall season at the Head of the Charles Regatta this weekend. Lady Vol Head Coach Lisa Glenn sent two varsity shells to Boston to compete in the Club 8+ event on Saturday and Championship 8+ event on Sunday. The coxswains navigating the two crews are Stephanie Davis and Caitlin Rahter.
Last year at this event, the Lady Vols finished just 7.14 seconds behind Lake Washington Rowing Club for second place in the Club 8+, maintaining their four-year streak of placing in the top two in that event. In 2001 and 2002, Tennessee took home the gold.
UT's 2005 Club 8+ shell, comprised of Renee Brittle, Katelyn Brownlee, Alexandra Shishkov, Lindsay Ehrlich, Leah Smelser, Erin-Monique Shelton, Mary Jones and Caroline Howell, will compete against some of the world's best universities and rowing clubs including Lake Union Crew (Wash.), which finished third last year, and Cascade Rowing (Wash.), who placed fifth
Lady Volunteers Lauren Wells, Sarah Hutcheson, Kristen Galloway, Rachel Mayberry, Heather Hill, Krista Gearing, Elizabeth Schwartz and Christina Dobratz of the Championship 8+ shell will be competing against two Dutch national team boats (Minerva Rowing Club and R.V. Rynland), two U.S. national team boats (US Rowing and Princeton Training Center), the Canadian national team (London Training Center) and 39 other world-class teams. The Dutch national team (ASR Nereus) took first in 2004 followed by Princeton University, Yale University and US Rowing. Tennessee notched a program-best tenth-place finish that year.
Former Lady Vols Lizzie Brown ('04), Kaitlin Bargreen ('05), Chelsea Pemberton ('05), Dana Forbes ('05), McKenzie Craig ('05), Andrea Bagwell ('05), Kacey Montgomery ('03), Melissa DiCerbo ('05) and Kristen Logan ('03) will compete in the Championship 8+ event as well, representing Knoxville Rowing Association. This is the first year UT alumni will be entering a Championship 8+ shell, having only fielded a boat of four in the past.
"The biggest challenge this weekend is going to be our ourselves," Glenn said. "We have so far to go, but are feeling good about moving in that direction. We have progress to make in our boats and in our athletes. Whether we come in first or 20th this weekend, we have to make improvements in boat speed, skill and teamwork."
While two Varsity Lady Vol boats are in Boston, three others remained in Knoxville to represent the program at the Head of the Tennessee on Saturday. UT will enter two straight 4- shells, one Championship 8+ and look to field up to four Novice 8+ boats. Collegiate Division I teams from the southeast and local club teams will be competing in the Head of the Tennessee.
The Lady Vols will be back in action at the Head of the Chattahoochee from Nov. 5-6 in Chattanooga, Tenn.
